SC. DWINELL, Editor.
Thursday Morniug, July 9, 1863.
Romans to tho Rescue.
Our beautiful city is to be fortified at
once. Already have ample means
been subscribed for this purpose. An
experienced and skillful engineer is on
the spot ready to direct the good work,
and the object of t(iis notice is to call,
on the citizens of Floyd county, to
furnish hands to accomplish it. La.
borers are wanted at once, and mutt be
forthcoming. Thej will only be want
ed for a short time—our friends are not
asked to tubteribe labor—their hands
will be will paid for.
Our natural advantages for defence
aro very good, and can speedily be ren
dered effectual against raids and raid
ers. To-day (Tuesday) at 11 o’clock,
A. M., a mass meeting of the citizens
of Floyd county, is to be held at the
Court House, to discuss matters con
nected with the Floyd Legion, and at
tho same time, all who have laboring
hands, are requested to give into Col
Yeiser, the number of hands they can
furnish to work on the city fortifica
tions.
The citizens of this town and county
hove now an opportunity to show their
zeal in this matter, and are requested
to suspend their usual avoentions.—
Let the stores be closed that to-day
may be a day of business in tho all ab
sorbing subject of the day. Every
man is interested in tho speedy ac
complishment of this necessary and
praisworthy undertaking. Let no man
stay at homo, nil should be Here to lend
the influonoc of their presence. I/ot
Home to-day be a busy place of busi
ness—the business that engrosses the
attention of the nation. Homans, you
aro not called on to defend your homes,
you aro merely informed that the good
work has commenced, and you can all
take an active Bhnre in it.
Ajlist of the narnas of those who
furnish hands, and the number of
hands given, will be published in this
paper.

It seems to have been Hooker’s in-1

the Gaps, and thus cut Ewell off from I
the balance of our forces, and his base
of supplies, but he has completely
failod, and it is reported that all his

If Lee can divide his forco he will prob
ably whip him by detail.
Wo are now 22 miles from Harper’s
Ferry and ten from Winchester —
Since the rain last Friday and Satur
day, the weather has been fine. Most
of the men who broke down on the
march from Culpepper, have come up
and are now well. Ab near as I can
ascertain, four or five men of our di
vision, died of sun stroke on that
march.
The beautiful flog, presented to the
Light Guards, in 1860, is again in pos
session of one of the formor members
of the company, Commissary G. C, Nor
ton has it. It was lost when we left
Winchester, in July, 1861. Was found
by a servant and has been cared for by
a Mr. McGuire, of this county. The
company is greatly rejoiced at the
recovery of this memento of. the La
dies’ esteem. Whether they have
shrunk from the duties implied in the
motto, "Our liberties we prize—Our
right wo will maintain,” let others
judge.
Gen. Lee has completely non plussed
Hooker this time, and what uio to be
our future movements, ’tis useless to
conjecture. M. D.

Bear Courier:—Since olosing my
letter, on Sunday morning, nothing of
particular interest has ocourred, so far
as the infantry is concerned, except
that they have been most of the time
in motion.
At four o’clock Sunday evening
report was brought into camp that the
Abolitionists were driving back Stewart’s
cavalry, in the vioinity of Uppervillo,
Our brigade was ordered to cross immo
diately to the 60uth side of the river,
and go to the support of the cavalry
Consequently we forded at double quioki
few stopping to remove any part of
'their clothing. Marohed to within a
half mile of tho summit and halted for
the night. It was now ascertained
that the Yankees had pursued our cav
airy, one part to Upperville and tho
the balance through Shephards’ Gap
which is about five miles from both
Ashby’s and Snicker’s Gaps, being
midway between them. The Federal
cavalry are said to have acted with des
peration, and as they greatly outnum
bered our oavalry, at least the latter
say so, they gave way at first slowly
but soon in great rout, and as fast
their horseB could be made to carry
them.
Of tho losses in this fight, I have no
oertain information. It is rumored
that we lost one pieoe of artillery and
quite a number—some say a regiment
—of prisoners.
Yesterday morning our brigade only
passed up to the lop of the ridge.
Snicker’s Gap, then filed to the right
and proceeded on a rough mountain
road, right along the very summit
about five miles, then took a stand.
Had been here some three or four hours<
when it having been ascertained that
the Yankees had fallen back the night
previous, we were ordered back across
the river, and crossing at Shephard'
Ford, which is five miles from the top
of the Gap, and came on to this place,

Dear Ccicrizr:—Wu have an oppor
tunity of sending you it brief account
tho military evils, which have trans
pired in Middle Tennessee, within the
past few days. On Wednesday the en
emy in force, undor Kosencrans, left
Murfreesboro’ in two columns, one pro
ceeding towards Sholbyville, on tho
Shelbyville and Murfreesboro’ pike i
and tho other towards Hoover’s Gap,
the road leading from Murfreesboro’
Manchester. A simultanoods attack
was made about two o’clock, P. M., and
unexpected and vigorous wore the
assaults, that, our cavalry was rapidly
forced back, allowing the enemy to get
possession of the gap, and compelling
our forces to evacuate Shelbyville.
The main body of tho enemy, com
manded by Rosencrans in person, is at
tempting to flank us oh our right, and
battle is expected daily.
Bates’ and Siddoll’s brigades held the
enemy in cheok for three days in front
Hoover’s Gap. Falling back gradu

The 1st Ga. lost four killed, forty woun

Eurey, of the Sharp Shooters, were
among the killed.
The main army is now ooncontr ated
at this place, reinforcements are con
tinually arriving. The army is in line
of battle, and appearances indicate that
the battle will be fought about three or
four miles South East from here.
A detachment of the enemy's caval
ry made a dash towards Dechard, on
Saturday night or Sunday, and succeed
ed in destroying some ,trestle work on
the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad
The trains are still runtjinri, however,
and the mails, reinforooments, &c., are
being carried through.
Several ol our cavalry were drowned,
while attempting to cross Duck river,
at Shelbyville, during the evacuation of
that place. A courier was captured
yesterday, and from him it was ascer
tained that the enemy’s force consisted
of twelve Divisions: Amounting to
probably 60,000 or 65,000 men.
It is reported that Gen. Thomas

During a brief sicirmish on yesterday
Gen. Starnes, commanding a portion of
our cavalry, was shot by a negro, and
died last evening. There will be fear
ful work with the contrabands when
