bear: Courier.—Since my last letter
of the23tli ultimo, Bates' brigade has
been on tho move almost constantly
We loft on the same day for Tiners
Station^remained thereuntil the fol
lowing morning, whon toft look tho
cars for Louden, seventy miles distant,
whioh place- we reached about dark
Tho r.cxt morning, tho 38th Ga. was
ordpfud on pickot,. on the bunks of the
llo’ston, which is properly the Tonne*-
hUOv about tUroouillea from ttnviv, wllert*
we remained until tho Morning of the
31st. Wo wore then ordered back to
town, where wo agam look tlio-oars,
and with the rest of tire Brigade, pro
ceeded to this place, which is situated
or the Hiwaesee, and is distant about
40 mile* from Louden, and 40 from-
Dalton. The Brigade has three days’
cooked rations preparod, and appear
ascea indicate that we may be ordered
to move ut any moment.
The military authorities -have, posses
sion of the Bail Road. Civilians arc
not allowed to pass on the road this
side of Dalton; troops are passing to
and fro constantly; nearly all of our
forces have loft Louden, and wo learn
that the Bnil Road bridge spanning the
Holston at that place will probably be
burned before night.
IvnoXVille has been evacuated sever,
al days, but the etiomy hue not yet oc
cupied the place, fearing that it will
provo a trapto them. Burnsides’ for-
oes are supposed to be gt CJinoh River.
We still oooupy Cumberland gap, and
will probably hold the place as long as
possible. Reported that a corps from
tho army of Virginia is within support
ing distance. Tho enemy is making
demonstrations at tho mouth of the
Hiwaesee, about 20 miles from this
place; troops aro being Bent in that di
rection. Some demonstrations are be
ing mode by Rosenorans at Bridgeport,
but they aro generally considered os
merely feints to cover movements in
the direction of Blythes’ ferry.
Tho wisoacres are completely uon-
.plussea hi regard to present military
movements. At present the opposing
Generals are trying tho virtue of strat
egy almost, entirely, but the general
impression is that the invading hosts
will bo badly whipped, if they can only
be induced to cross tho Tennessee.

The latest news from Charlesron was

been on that day a furious bombard

by the enemies fleet and land batteries.
Tho firing continued throughout tho

Tho rumor that Wharton was killed,
and a portion of two or three compa
nies captured is false. ■
We have reason to believe that am
ple preparations arc being made to re
pel any force that has yet been report
ed to havo crossed the Tenn. below
Chattanooga.
What theotiomys’ intentions are it is
iruly hard to divine, but, it is hardly
probable that he will attempt with any
10,000 or 15,000 men, to pass Braggs’
flank and thus expose himself to bervt
off from the rear. If lie were making
a mere raid upon Romo, he might have
boon here three days ago, if not defeat-
t-d in tho effort.
We hear u great many rumors from
the front but they generally turn out
to bo tube. It is a matter to ho great
ly regretted that some people should
be so ready and willing to repeat, and
bo.nc even to exaggerate bad news, ~
