kee county, Ala, wasarrested in Chattoo
ga couutya lew days since, by .^ Yar
brough, and committed to jail in th.s place
charged with forgery.
The forgery consisted, as we, are told, ip
foxing the signature of W. S. Cothran,
Son* Co., Berrys A Co., J. MGBHifth ■&
Co., and some other business houses of this
city, to letters of recommendation to New
Voi’k houses, for the purpose of obtaining
credit for the firm of “Smith & Co.” whose
letters were to be directed to Melville,
Chattooga county, Ga.
It seems that the New York parties were
suspicious of the forged letters, and wrote
to the parties in Home to ascertain their
genuineness. A registered letter from
firm here was directed to “Smith & Co.,
Melville, Ga.,” with instructions to the Post
Mistress there not to permit the letter to
he taken out except by a member of the
firm of Smith & Co. In that way .BeUox-
posed himself and hence his arrest.’
