I have considered the subject well, and
find it rather a difficult task, 'not from the

will your readers all understand aud like
that sort of style ? There are, in this
seemingly plain, matter-of-fact subject,as in
ji all specialities, terms and sentences well
understood hy the initiated, but needing
explanations for the many, and your space
does not allow yon to insert. lengthy arti

’11 nd the true meaning of a word before we
dispute upon side issues.
Now, it is net an easy task to do that in
a few sentences. P anting is planting—
lor instance, everybody has a way to pnt
his tree in some bole or other; but the the
ory of rational planting (the results of
thousands of experiments) requires expla
nations, illustrations and comparisons. The
same in regard to pruning, to the prepara
tion and fitness of the soil, the selection of
species or varieties of fruit, etc.
Do you not see already that he who shall
succeed in condensing in six or eight arti
cles, the grit and pith of a few volumes,
(let us say of scores) must be gifted indeed?
But when he makes use of the scientific
terms, which, iu this esse he is nb'iged to
do, his remarks will do little or no good to
the many; and it is just the many who had
no time, nor means, nor opportunity to
study the subject, that will demand expla
nations. V
Here we stop at the very start. For we
