“Syntax”—The Modem Janlus.
“Slat Atimu Umbra.”
About two weeks ajo we wrote an article
headed “Latest and Last.” Immediately
upon noticing it, a' certain fellow sat down
to answer it. Possessed of an active stu
pidity, and a very facile idiocy, it. took
him only two weeks and three days to fix
up the chaste and elegant interlocutory es
say with which the readers of the Com
mercial were delighted on Sunday.
Mr. Reese we are confident, will work
out a -spicy independent, powerful paper.
We welcome him back to the traces, and
wait with impatience for his initial number.
Ytuuwill.still run an exchange with us,

The only point in the remarkable | docu
ment to which we shall refer iatho one up
on using an adjective instead-of riri' adverb.
Any volume which treats of the idtoms of
the languages, would mirror to him; fully
the fool he has made of himself. In gen
era 1 terms, we advise his friends to feed
him bountifully upon thistles, curry him
vigorously and put him back' in Ins stall.
Wo take this occasion to' remark that we
shall never in future pay the least atten
tion to criticisms made upon us, but that we
shall treat them with the. most .severe si
lence.
We have been attacked by many ambi
tious scribblers, and-upon many grounds.
- Our language has been misconstrued and
twisted to suit envious purposes—the most
innocent remarks have, been.]
into the severest strictures. One,man at
tacks ns becanse we are errss-eyed; another
launches his bolts at us because we : are so
unfortunate as to have attended. College;
another, because we’ happened tp.be the
father of six unfortunate children (all of
them females) and iho-unhappy husband of
a one-legged wife' (sheidso a female) as if
