Gentlemen—These are the days of
heavy taxation—in front, iu rear and on
both fianks. -
The old Council havo been callod upon
repeatedly to make a showing of the finan
cial condition of the city. This they have
as repeatedly neglected or declined to do.
Without intending to charge that there is
anything wrong, many of the taxpayers
would be very much obliged to see a thor
ough sifting of these matters iu print, un
der your hands, As there is but one of the
old Council re-elected and the Mayor, they
will doubtless be able to aid much in the
discharge of a duty, which the taxpayers
believe to bo now incumbent on you. It is
hoped you will make response to the ques
tions put to the old Council,' through the
Courier of a recent date, as the old
Council omitted to do so. Unless you should
determine that the taxpayers have no right
to inquire what has become of the money
which they have paid. If so, many of the
taxpayers will be inclined to fear the wrong
men have been elected. It is hoped that
everything will be itemized and that there
will be no generalizing.

Row to Buy Poultry.
Few housekeepers, and fewer cooks, are
as good judges of the age of poultry as they
ought to be. Wc all know when poultry
comes upon the table whether it is ten
der or touoh, and there should be no diffi
culty of knowing just as certainly whether
a chicken, duck, goose or turkey, is old or
young when it is offered for sale.
Now, the sollowing is offered as a rule
by which poultry can be safely judged,
which, if read over a few times and then
laid away for ready reference when need-
ei, no person need purchase old, tough
poultry UDless from choice.
If a hen’s spur is hard, and the scales on
the legs rough, sho is old, whether you see
her head or not,but the head will corrobro-
bate your observation.
If the under bill is so stiff that you caa-
Dot bend it down, and the comb thick and
rough, leave her, no matter how fat and
plump, for some one else less particular.—
A young heu has only the rudiments of
spurs ; the scales uu the legs arc smooth,
glossy and fresh colored,, whatever the col
or may be; the claws tender and short, the
nails sharp, the under bill soft, and the
comb thin and smooth.
An old hen turkey has rough scales on
the legs, callosities on the soles of the feet,
and long, strong claws; a young one the
reverse of all these marks.
When the feathers are on and the old
turkey-cock has a long tuft or beard,a young
one, but a sprouting one; and when they
are ofij ths smooth scales on the iegs decide
the point, besides the difference in size of
the wrattles of the neck and in the elastic
shoots upon the nose.
Au old goose when alive is known by
the rough legs, the strength of the wings,
particularly at the pinions, the thickness
and strength of the bills, and the fineness
of the feathers; and when plucked, by the
legs, tho tenderness of the skin under the
wings, by the pinions and the coarseness of
the kio.
Ducks are distinguished by the same
means, but there is this difference—that
a duckling’s bill is much longer in propor
tion to the breadth of its head than the old
duck.

Spread the Truth.
Some mediral men insist that It undignified to
advertise a remedy, however valuable it may be?
Queer reasoning this. It is like saying that an
article which the world needs should be hid in
a comer—that benefits and blessings may be too
widely diffused—that the means of protecting
and restoi ing health should be a close monopoly
and not accessible to alL The argument is had.
It is worse than that;it Is inhuman. Suppose Hos

Instead of cureing and invigorating millions,
the good efiect of the preparation would have
been confined to a comparative few, There is
the highest authority Tor saying that light
should not be hid under a bushel; that what
ever is excellent should be placed asacilyon a
bill: where all men can take cognizance of it-
It is upon this principal that the Bittern bare
been advertised and continue to be advertised in
every newapaper of any prominence in tbe wes
tern hemisphere, and that the spontaneous tes
timonials in its favor have been translated into
all written languages. Thousands enjoy per
fect health to -day who would be languishing on
beds of sickness if the newspapers had not
pread the truth with regard to this unequaled
inrigorant and corrective for and wide. Sup
pose profit has been reaped from this publicity.
Is that any argument against it? If the pnblic
health has been protected; if lives have been sa

sick restored! great goods has been accom
plished: and who so mean as to grndgo to exer
