Second Letter From Hoxu A* II. Steph*
cus*
Liberty Hali.,Crawfordville.Ga. 1
January 6tfa, 1871. J
To Ac Editor of the Coiutitntioncilist, Augus
ta, Ga.
Dear Sir :—In the issue of your paper
of yesterday appeared an expositiou of the
facts of my connection with the lease of
the State Road
When that was penned, several day3 ago,
I supposed, as is appareat from the whole
paper, that everything pertaiuing to tho
letting of the lease, under the act of the
Legi-lature, was fair and jus-
If there had been anything wrong in
the acceptance or 1 ejection of any bid or
bids, I was not aware of it, as 1 stated —
On that peiat I had seen or heard of no
C'mphiints whatever.
To day L have b'en put in possession of
a statement in wiitiug. made by Mr. A. B.
Seago, of Atlanta.in which heavers that he
and others named by h.tn d d put in a bid
for tho os the road at 836,500 pc month—
being 811,500 more per month than the
sum bid by the company to which it was
leased, and in which my name appears as
one of the lessees.
He moreover slates that bis company was
worth a million of dollars, aud tendered se
curitv to the amount of over eight millions
of dollars.
This statement coming from tho quart :r
it docs, is quite sufficient to cause mo to
sever all my connection with the lease. In
doing this, it is not my wish to be under
stood as passing jud ement upon the con
duct of others. I act only for myself, in
declaring that I cann Jt tbiuk for a moment
of boldiug an interest in the ieass under this
statement of facts.
In all that I did iu regard to the wbolo
matt r, as I have before stated, I was gov
erned more by a wish and desire to promote
the interest of the State than by any object
of personal gains.
I send you with this copy a return by
me to t he State of all the interest I had
in the company to which the road was
leased, which I will be obliged to you to
give to tho public with this communica
tion.
Yours Irulv,
A H Stephens,
