Our Kills w ant Wheal from our own
Farmers,
We have real Messrs. Stewart, Austin &
Co’s- remarks, in the Courier of the 21st
With pleasure, as it is practical and to the”
point. The farmers of Cherokee Georgia and
Alabama should supply all the tni!ls°in the
country with wheat, and keep the money in
our country. We have a soil and climate
well adapted to the growing of fine wheat,
and if I am not mistaken, I heard a gentle^
man say, some years ago, whose business ex
perience and vast practical inform ition was

The error with our farmers is sowing their
wheat too late. Most of it is sowed in No
vember and December, when in should have
been sown in the early part of October. Ear-
.y sowing gives it a strong and deep root to
stand the winters’ cold, whilst late sowings
as in last November, and December just past’
the wheat was in the sprout when that cold
and intense heavy freezes was upon us. Some
of course was frozed out, and what eseaued
being killed, looks poor. 1
I walked over 15 acres of wheat a day or
two’ago, sowed on a rich mountain side, fac
ing the North, and sown the 3d week in No
vember, and not a blade of it was to be seen.
It was completely killed when in sprout. We
saw on stalk lands, which causes the late and
hurried sowing, and such light yields, when
we ought to have our ground, intended for
wheat, in fallow, so as it can be seeded in
due season. Our present system makes the
wheat crop precarious and unprofitable, ow
ing to its being sown so late. There is a seed
time and harvest time, and a full crop can
only be expected by seeding and sowing in
due time.

The only States to which he can refer are

Governor appoints every siDg'e officer in the
State except the members of the Legisla
ture—appoints every election officer. What
would Senators from the North say to such
a power as this vested in the Governor’s of
their States, the Democratic Governors of
New York and Connecticut for instance?
lie would boil over from the top of his head
to the sole of his feet.
Here is a chance to investigate the purity
of elections. Why
HERE IN WASHINGTON,
not two years ago, a negro was mobbed
almost to death, and what was his offence?
Voting the Democratic ticket. The police
were even powerless to protect him. You
had ample power to redress this outrage, but
nothing was done, not a voice was raised to
dedounce it. The Senator from South Caro
lina (Mr. Sawyei) says outrages prevailed
there against the Republicans only. lie,
(Mr. T.) had read in the papers that in
South Carolina a Conservative mass-meet
ing was broken up, and the Conservative
candidate was not allowed t > speak. It is
we'l known that all over the South a terri
ble intimidation is praotised by the negroes
toward any of their class who are suspect
ed of a design to vote the Democratic tick
et,and that any of them so at the risk of his
life.
Yet we hear no complaints against this,
but as soon as a radical candidate is defeat
ed the cry of Ku Klux is raised, and the ef
fort is at ouce made to overcome the will of
the people.
But not a word is said when a Govern
or assumes to elect the Legislature, and all
the other State officers, as in Florida, when
eight Conservative counties were thrown
out,and a radical county,to which the same
objection applied, were counted in. Yes,
there were outrages in North Caioliua, out.
rages that were enough to make the cheek
of every man tingle with indignation. The
doings of Kirk’s lambs, the attoeious outra
ges committced by this band of murderers,
formed a dark page indeed in American
h istory.

The Stereoscope.
A recent number of the American Jour
nal of’ Chemistry contained the following
sttry of the first introduction of the stero-
scopo to the savans of France. The Abbe
Moigno took the instrument to Arago, and
tried to interest him in it; but Arago un
luckily had a defect of vision that made
him see double, so in looking into the
stereoscope he saw only a medley of four
pictures. The Abbe then went to Savart,
but he was quite as incapable of apprecia
ting the thing, for he had but one eye.—
Becquerel was next visred, but he was near
ly blind, and consequently cared but little
for the new optical toy. The Abbe, not
discouraged, called next upon Pouillet, of
ibe Conservatoire des Arts et Metiieis. He
was a good deal interested in the descrip
tion of the apparatus, Dut unfortunately he
squinted, and therefore could see noth-

Some medical men insist that it undignified to
advertise a remedy, however valuable it may be?
Queer reasoning this. It is like saving that an
article which the world needs should be hid in
a corner—that benefits and blessings may be too
widely diffused—that the means of protecting
and rostoiing health should be a close monopoly
and not accessible to all. Tbe argument is bait
It is worse than that; it ia inhuman. Suppose Hos-

Instead of careing and invigorating millions,
the good effect of the preparation would have
been confined to a comparative few, There is
tho highest authority ;for saying that light
should not be hid under a bushel; that what
ever is excellent should be placed as a city on a
hill: where all men can take cognizance of it*
It is upon this principal that the Bitters have
been advertised and continue to be advertised in
every newspaper of any prominence in the wes
tern hemisphere, and that the spontaneous tes
timonials iu its favor have been translated into
all written languages. Thousands enjoy per
fect health to day who would bo languishing on
beds of sickness if the newspapers had not
pread the truth with regard to this unequaled
invigorant and corrective far and wide. Sup
pose profit has been reaped from this publicity.
Is that any argument against it? If the public
