WEDNESDAY MORNING, JULY 0
: Jefferson Davis Alleged Disguise.
Editor Chicago Tribu ne,—In a Chicago
paper of June 9 there appeared an arti
cle headed “Ten Thousand a Year Ad
versity,” which was false in every state
ment it made. It is liigh time the
people should know the truth in regard
to the capture of Jeff. Davis. I have
obtained the following truth ful relation
of the capture from one of the partici
pants in it, and submit it to the accept
ance of the Tribune's many readers, be
lieving that it is right to'be just, though
the heavens fall. X.
[From the Portland (Me ) Argus ]
I am no admirer of Jeff. Davis. I
ani a Yankee, bom between Saccarap-
pa and Gorham Corner, am full of
Yankee prejudices; butl think it wick
ed to lie even about him, or, for that
matter, about the devil.
I was with the party that captured
Jeff. Davis; saw the whole transaction
from its beginning. I now say—and I
hope you will publish it—that Jeff
Davis did not have on, at the time he
was taken, any garment sucli as is worn
by women, lie did have over his
shoulders a water-proof article of
clothing — something like a “ Have
lock.” It was not in the least con
cealed. He wore a hat, and did uot
carry a pail of water on his head, nor
carry pail, bucket, or kettle in any way.
To the best of my recollection, he
carried nothing whatever in his hands.
His wife did not tell any person that
her husband mighthurt .somebody if he
got exasperated. She behaved like a
lady, and he as a gentleman, though
manifestly he was chagrined at being
taken into custody. Our soldiers be
haved like gentlemen, as they were, and
our officers like honorable, brave men;
and the foolish stories that went the
newspaper rounds of the da}-, telling
how wolfislily he deported himself,
were all false. I know what I am
writing about. I saw Jefferson Davis
several times while he was staying in
Portland, many years ago; and I think
I was the first one who recognized him
at the time of his arrest.
When it was known that he was cer
tainly taken, some newspaper corres
pondent—I knew his name at the time
—fabricated the story about the dis
guise in an old woman’s dress. I heard
the whole matter talked over as a good
joke; and the officers, who knew better,
never took the trouble to deny it. Per
haps they thought the Confederate Pres
ident‘deserved all the contempt that
could be put upon him. I think so too,
only I would never perpetrate a false
hood that by any means would become
history. And, further, I would never
slander a woman who has shown so
much devotion as Mrs. Davis has to her
husband, no matter how wicked he is
or may have been.
I defy any person to find a single
officer or soldier who was present at
the capture of Jeff. Davis, who will say,
upon honor, that he was disguised in
woman’s clothes, or that his wife acted
in any way unlady-like or undignified
on that occasion. I go for trying him
for his crimes, and if he is found guilty
punishing him. But I would not lie
about him when the truth will certain
ly make it bad enough.

North «k South Railroad..
A called meeting of the stockholders
of the North & South Railroad was
held in Columbus on the 2nd instant.
From the President’s report we clip
the following:
Since the organization in August,
1871, the company have completed,
and in excellent running order, 20
miles of road, graded 40 miles addi
tional; surveyed, 118; located, 80; se
cured right-of-way, 88. Outfit consists
of one locomotive, two passenger cars,
one baggage, four boxes and twelve flat
cars. From September 1st, 1872, to
May 31st the earnings were: From
freight, So,332.43; passengers, $6,138.-
55; mail service, $264; total $11,735.46.
Operating expenses (not including the
month of May), §6,467.73.
The construction account to May 21st
amounted to §637,022.22; outfit, $19,
981.27; total $657,903.82. Paid up sub
scriptions as follows: Columbus, $200,-
000; LaGrange, $25,000; Rome, $100,
000; individuals, $77,089.54; total
$402,089.54; leaving balance due
$254,914.28. The report says that
pay this balance and move forward the
company must look to bonds on the
next section, additional collections and
new subscriptions. He believes that
the next 240 bonds with such acid
can be secured will complete the road
to LaGrange. A comparison is insti
tuted with the Mobile and Girard Rail
road to show that with similar good
management the North & South will
be a much better paying investment
for the city of Columbus, as the short
distance already completed gives prom
ise of what may be expected when the
road reaches LaGrange.

On
Cotton and Sugar Culture in Egypt.
A gentleman in Boston recently re
ceived a letter from a friend in Egypt,
who makes some interesting statements
concerning the growing material pros
perity of that countiy. The develop
ment of the cotton trade there has been
one of the most successful in produce
of that staple known to the Egyptian
planters. The whole crop of the year
is estimated at two hundred million
pounds, which at Liverpool brings
prices ranging from ten pence per pound
for common to thirty-five pence for the
best Sea Island, there being Ashmoor
and Galani as intermediate grades.
The traffic in cotton has been entirely
out of the hands of speculators and
committed to commission houses. The
writer touches upon the enterprise of
the railway that is to unite the Soudan,
Abyssinia and Middle Africa with
Alexandria, Cairo and the Red Sea, and
indicates the great development of
country which is expected to result
from it The Viceroy has recently
largely increased his sugar interests in
Upper Egypt, and while he hitherto
planted only 55,000 fedars, or acres, of
and with sugar cane, he now has 150,-
000 under cultivation, each fedar yield
ing under good management one hun
dred cantors of gray sugar and twenty-
five cantars of molasses, a cantar being
ninety-eight pounds. It is no wonder
that the Viceroy is the wealthiest mon
arch in the world, when all his revenues
of which this is but a small part, are so
immense, but the gentleman who writes
of him says that there can be no doubt
‘That the actual Government of Egypt
is the best she has had for many centu
ries past, and that nothing is neglected
to develop her resources.”
$711,809 47
This statement gives the condition
the company, May 31st, concisely.
June 9th, the first $24,000 of bonds
were endorsed, and in addition $23,000
on second section were issued, making
bonded debt, June 30th, $263,000.

above, the following unprovided for

lion. Dunlap Scott, of Rome, an
nounced that he had been sent by the
city of Rome to represent the stock of
said city in the North and South Rail
road. and had been instructed by his
City Council to make certain inquiries
as to what- appropriation had been
made of Rome bonds, how many had
been disposed of, and how many re
mained on hand; also as to particulars
in regard to contracts, etc.
To each and all of these interrogalo-
ries submitted in written form, CapL
Chipley-in behalf of the Board of Di
rectors, made plain and explicit replies,
readily giving all the information, on
each and every point asked for by the
city of Rome.
Mr. Scott expressed himself as fully
satisfied with the explanations.
Trr for Tat.—The editor of the Co
lumbus Enquirer thus gets even with
“ a fellow up in Pennsylvania”:
A fellow up in Pennsylvania calls us
“a liar, defaulter and no soldier” be
cause the course of the Enquirer on the
“decoration of graves” question did
not please him, and he “shoulders all
the responsibility of what he says.”
He might do that with impunity, if he
tried here, for he is too mean to kick,
too pioor to get damage from, and to
send him to the penitentiary for libel
would be simply to restore him to his
ancestral halls, which he recently left
with his hair much shorter than it is
Rules and Methods of Disinfection.
For privies, water closets, drains and
sewers: Eight or ten pounds of sulphate
of iron (copperas)dissolved in five or six
gallons of water, with half pint of crude
carbolic acid added to the solution and
briskly stirred, makes the cheapest and
best disinfecting fluid for common use.
It can be procured in every town and
by any family, and if the carbolic acid
is not at hand, the solution of copperas"
may be used without it.
T-o prevent, privies and water closets
from becoming infected or offensive
Pour a pint of this strong solution in
every water closet pan or privy seat
once or twice every day.
To disinfect masses of filth, privy-
vaults, sewers and drains: Gradually
pour in this solution until it reaches
and disinfects all the foul material.
To disinfect extensive masses or sur
faces of putrescent materials, and for
drains, sewers and ditches, the “dead
oil” of coal tar, or coal tar itself is avail
able ; coal tar may be used as a disin
fecting paint upon the walls of cellars,
stables or open drains.
Quicklime is useful as an absorbent
and drier upon foul walls and in damp
places; and white-washing with it
should be practiced in common tene
ments, factories, basements, closets and
garrets.
A dealer in artificial eyes, thinking
he had found aliandsomebusiness open
ing in the far west, has been utterly
ruined, it is said, by a competitor
who has devised a process for hard
ening and preserving the unclaimed
natural optics, which are swept out of
the different barrooms each morning.
Fatal Duel Near New Orleans.—
On Tuesday the 1st instant, Col. R, B.-
Rhett, jr., editor of the Picayune, killed
in a duel Judge W. H. Cooley. The
difficulty grew out of libel suit against
the Picayune in which Cooley, was
counsel for prosecution.
This is from 'the pen of the local edi-
torof the Marietta Journal: “Weknow
a nose, a nose that no other knows,
’neath starry 'eyes, o’er ruby lips it
grows, that for grace and beauty would
tempt the poet .and hold the sculptor
in admiring gaze; Yet that nose, how
it can snore!”
