A Well Wisher. .
To Clean Paint.—A correspondent
says: Use but little water at once; keep
it warm and clean by changing it often,
A flannel cloth takes off all fly specks
better than cotton. Soap will remove
the paint, so use but little of it. Cold
tea is the best liquid for cleaning var
nish paint, window panes and mirrors.
A saucer of sifted ashes should always
he standing at hand to clean unvar
nished paint that has become badly
smoked; it is better than soap. Never
put soap upon glass, unless it can he
thoroughly rinsed off, which can never
be done to window glass. Wash off the
specks with warm tea, and rub the
panes dry; then make a paste of whiting
and water, and put a little in the center
of each pane. Take a dry cloth and
rub it over the glass, then rub it off with
a chamois skin or flannel and your
glass will shine like crystal.

effective, the honey being drawn out
clear as syrup, and the comb remaining

The health of Rome is a matter of
peculiar gratitude to our citizens. No
symptoms of cholera, however slight,
have disturbed our community, while
'the absence of all other diseases is re
markable. No watering place in the

bill of health than that presented by
our city.

Spain.—The republicanism of Spain
does not set well on her stomach, and
like Mexico, revolutions and counter
revolutions are as common as showers
in April. We are half inclined to
the opinion that republicanism is a
humbug anyhow, and a nation to be
prosperous must he conservative. Re
publicanism is but one degree removed
from anarchy.
C. H. C. Willingham.—This our ex
cellent friend and splendid newspaper
man, has purchased an interest in that
lively Georgia paper, the Griffin Star,
and becomes its principal editor. We.

We have one, presented by our Mend

And now comes Col. A. Shorter with
one weighing 25} ounces, which is the
largest tomato on record.
The Chattanooga Times of Sunday
says:
About half-past 12 last night, Charley
Whiteside, colored, was stabbed by
Horace Greeley, colored, fatally. The
wound indicated that Charley had been
cut with a butcher or cheese knife, the
entrance being to the right of the spi
nal column, and just under the shoul
der-blade. Charley lived but a few
minutes after the fatal stab. At the
time of going to press a coroner’s jury
was being summoned.
Subscription Bills. — Some two or
three weeks since, we sent to all of our
subscribers, in arrears, a statement, on
postal cards, of their accounts. A very
considerable number have promptly
responded. These have, without fur
ther trouble to ns, paid what they
owed. That is justice to ns, creditable
to them, and we are much obliged.
Many others have not yet made pay
ment, but we hope they soon will.
One moment’s consideration will satisfy
anyone of the great propriety of early
action in this matter.
the opinion that the parties will apply
to the City Council for assistance, and
to equip as a fire company for the city.
We are of the opinion that the present
organization of fire companies is really
more than is necessary with our present
water facilities, for several years. To
keep it up in its present imperfect
manner requires more appropriation of
money than our limited resources will
justify. To consider or accept any ad
dition to the present efficient oiganiza-
tion would he adding an additional
burden to our already over-burdened
resources. The effect would be further
to relieve several persons from payment
of any further taxes.
Therefore, we consider due the gen
eral tax-piyers, the present fire organi
zation, and the best interest of the city,
that said charter be not granted, if the
applicants do not specify that they will
not attempt to organize within the
limits of Rome.
Adopted, and the Clerk instructed to
forward a copy to the Judge of the Su
perior Court.

We have had frequent occasion to

that most of the freighting done between

The Fire Last Saturday.—We re
gret to chronicle the destruction by fire
of tiie residence of Dr. W. D. Hovt,
which occurred last Saturday morning.
The fire originated in the kitchen, and
when discovered about 4 o’clock, was
under such headway as to preclude the
hope of arresting the flames. All ef
forts were directed towards the removal
of the furniture ; and with the aid
the neighbors the Doctor succeeded in
removing the greater portion of it with
out injury.
The fire department was out prompt
ly, and succeeded in extinguishing the
flames, leaving the wall:- standing,
charred and worthless. The building
was insured in the Southern Mutual
company, at Athens, for §1500; valued
at §2500.
This is the only fire that has occurred
in the city this year.
