were at the old soldiers’ meeting on the
4th.
Brooklyn, July 31.—The police
found a starving child in a tenement
house. It was farmed at ten dollars per
month. The parties guilty were arrest
ed.
Capt. Sheridan, sub-marine diver,
h..s succeeded in recovering two-thirds
of the light portion of the cargo of the
City of Washington. The heavy por
tion, iron and steel, will he recovered
intact.
A tornado which swept over Maine
last Saturday carried away two spans
of a bridge 300 feet long. The bridge
was on the European atid North Ameri
can Railroad, between Milford and
Oldtown.
The legal complications which have
caused a suspension pf work upon the
Kansas City, Memphis and Mobile Rail
road, having been settled, work was re
sumed on Monday, and will he pushed
forward rapidly.
. On Sunday the Colfax and Grass
Valley stage was stopped by four men,
near Grass Valley, Cal. They blew
open Wells, Fargo & Co.’s treasure box
and decamped with 83,000. None of
the passengers were molested.
A very intelligent citizen living near
Tuscumbia, Alabama, says that during
tiie prevalence of cholera at Huntsville,
some seventy or eighty miles off, the
vegetables on his place decomposed so
rapidly "that it was impossible to use
them—a thing that in all his experience
he had never noticed before. He re
garded it as purely atmospheric.
On the night of July IS, a man
named Hall, living on the plantation
of Mrs. Thomas Reid, in Madison
county, Tenn., was taken out of his bed
by a mob of fifteen negroes, disguised
as Ku-Klux, and hanged on a tree, they
charging liim with haring outraged a
negro woman living in the neighbor
hood.
John Schwartz, a German, aged 76,
living at Baltimore, committed suicide
Saturday by hanging. He married his
third wife, a young woman of 26, only
two weeks ago. The great disparity
between their ages was the subject of
ridicule among foolish friends, and the
old gentleman was so much annoyed by
their taunts that he was driven to des
peration.
The original bond of the defaulting
Treasurer Shute to the .Exeter Savings
Bank, for $35,000, which has been miss
ing since the absconding of Shute, on
the 20th of January last, has been
found, and is now in the hands of the
assignees of the bank. The bond, it is
reported, was found by the father of
the defaulter among old papers left by
his son.
The Winnebagcss- of Wisconsin re
fuse to go West to Nebraska and have
given in their ultimatum to that effect
to Brother E. Payson Smith, at a “big
talk.” Brother Smith, who evidently is
of the church militant, then told the
chiefs that they had to go willyniRy,
and that force would be used to com
pel them. Which suggests to the car
nal critic, less versed in the ways of re
ligion and the ring, the query, What
was the use of calling a “ council"’
when the whole matter had been irrevo
cably decided in advance? “I have
summoned you, gentlemen,” said the
gourmand to the turkeys, “to leam
with what sauce you would prefer to
be eaten.” “ But, sir,” replied to birds,
“ we do not wish to leam at all.” “Tut,
tut,” was the answer, “you are wander
ing from the subject.”

Cholera Kotos.
The Knoxville Press and Herald says
no families remain in Jonesboro’, ex
cept those in which some of the mem
bers are sick with cholera. Two white
men and a negro woman died them of
cholera during Monday night and Tues
day morning. Monday, Landon Mor
ris, living a mile from Jonesboro’, died
of cholera. There were five new cases
Tuesday.
Captain James telegraphed from
Knoxville to Dr. Sevier, of Jonesboro’,
on Monday, asking him if they needed
additional medical assistance at that
place. Dr. S. replied, “Not at present,
but may to-morrow.” We leam, how
ever, that later in the day a dispatch
was sent to Mayor Buie, asking for

The same paper sayso-nian named
Miller, died of the disease in Union
county. He was the father-in-law of
man named Johnson, who had died in
this city. After Johnson’s death, Mil
ler is reported to have taken the bed
ding and hauled it in a wagon to his
home in Union county. He died-a
few days afterward. A Dr. Lewis, who
waited upon him and two children,
also died.
A white man named Anderson Day
died yesterday morning, in a hovel be
low the mouth of Second Creek (Knox
ville). He was taken sick on Sunday,
and had all the symptoms, though his
doctor says it was not cholera. We
understand that his own brother said
that the deceased had not drawn
sober breath for a week before he was
taken sick. The corporation furnished

The citizens of Johnson City are
much alarmed at the proximity of the
disease to them, and it is reported here
that they have refused to allow any one
from Jonesboro’ to get off the train at
the depot

Mrs. Dr. Ward sent ns a fefir days ago
quite a curiosity in the way of a bean,
that was grown in her garden. The
yine lacked only one inch and a halfof
being three feet long. There wfiie. nu
merous beans on it, which grew in a clus
ter some two or three inches apart. From
the great length of the yine, we should
think it a valuable bean for the use of
stock.— Greensboro Beacon.
