Retroaction.--The late road law ex
empts no man between the ages of 1G
and 50, except ministers of the Gospel,
from road duty-. Consequently, some
of the overseers of roads in this county-
have summoned the District Road Com
missioners to work the roads as other
hands. Those who refused to work on
the roads have been summoned to at
tend court martial, to show cause why
they- should not he fined for not work

Look out,
commissioners! if your
subordinates get a chance at you they
will exercise it. What about overseers
being exempt?

Shameful! -ts
Wc understand that on last Satur
day, the 16th inst., an invalid lady, who
had been in Rome, under the care of
physicians for several months, came
down to Ladiga, Ala., on the accommo
dation train, and tjxrived tb get off the
train at that depot, as the nearesfdepot
to her home., f
Neither the conduitbr, a Mr. Dupn,
nor anyone connected with the train,
rendered her any assistance, hence-she
was unable to get off; but her husband,
expecting her, arrived about the time
the train was leaving, and tiered 4hC
conductor to let him have time to get
his sick wife off the car.
At that, the brakeman signalled the;
engineer to stop, which he did; but
this conductor, Air. Dunn, ordered the
engineer to go on, and as the gentleman
was assisting-his -sick wife- from the
platform of the car, the train was put
inf-motion, and -He-was compelled to
drag her off, which produced serious
mental and physical injuries.
We repeat this as we have heard it,
that the authorities of the road may
look into this shameful inhumanity
and neglect of duty.
We fear this negligence is too com
mon among those who have charge of
the lives of others.—Oxford Intelligencer.

The Great Southern Freight Dine.
We have had frequent occasion to
commend this line on account of its
quickness and reliability in delivering
freights from New York.
A few days since AIcAVilliams & Co.,
wholesale dealers in dry goods, received
some six or eight tons of freight by
this line from New York in Jive days;
and this is no uncommon thing by this
Charleston line.
Another grand excellence is the per
fect system and regularity with which
all their business is transacted. There
is no confusion at Charleston or else
where, and lots of goods are kept to
gether ; and if by any possibility goods
are lost or materially delayed, prompt
payment is made,, and that, too, with
out (/rumbling.
J. AI. Selkirk, well known to all busi
ness men of Georgia, is general super
intendent at Charleston. J. J. Griffin,
the general Western agent, a perfect
gentleman, will frequently be in Rome,
and we commend him to the shippers
of this section.
J. A. Smith, general freight agent at
Rome, will furnish any information
desired in regard to this line.

from our last quotations.
We quote New York Middlings at

hot, and if sunstroke was peculiar to
our climate, would have certainly de
veloped it. It was the most oppressive
day of the season.

Union Sunday School Celebration.
There will he a Sunday School pic
nic and celebration at the Alethodist
camp ground on the Texas Valley road,
six miles from the city, on the third
Friday in September.
A day of pleasant recreation and in
nocent enjoyment may be expected.
The Secor Triumphant.—We were
shown, yesterday, a letter from the
president of the Secor sewing machine
company to Messrs. Black & Caldwell,
agents, at this place, stating that the
“ best medal” was awarded by the Vi
enna Exposition to their machine. Two
other medals were awarded to American
machines, but “ the best” was awarded
to the Secor.
Southep-n Nursery.—We call special
attention to the advertisement of Irwin
& Thurmond, proprietors of the South
ern Nursery at Atlanta. The great
advantage of acclimated fruit trees over
those of a more northern growth, is
well understood. This advantage will
give preference to Southern nurseries,
and Irwin & Thurmond have the best.
See their advertisement.
Vienna.—A telegram from Vienna
states that the Wheeler & Wilson sew
ing machine has been awarded, at the
World’s Fair, the Grand Aledal of Prog
ress and Grand Aledal of Merit, and
was the only serving machine company
recommended by the international jury
for the grand diploma of honor.
This is a great success, and marks
another step in the popularity of this
great machine. Its fame is world
wide.
