Senator Carpenter-
Some daysagotheNew York Tribune
printed an article reflecting seriously
on the character of Senator Matt H.
Carpenter, Wisconsin, Presidentpro tem.
of the Senate. Mr. Carpenter, denies
the charges indignantly, and claims that
the person whom he escorted to Long
Branch was like Ccesar’s wife. The
Tribune does not credit this, and so
comes back at Senator Carpenter in this
way:
“We desire to be distinctly under
stood. The Tribune makes no charges
that cannot be substantiated. It does
not burrow for scandal, nor set any
drag nets for unclean gossip. There is
no man in public life of whom it would
not rather speak wcU Jhan ill; nor any
man whose faults or follies or had ex
ample it has the slightest interest to
palliate, cover or defend. It extenuates
nothing, nor sets down aught in malice.
“ It has been too much the custom of
political journals in past years to at
tack wildly and indiscriminately- the
private lives and characters of oppo
nents, while defending political associ
ates with slavish subserviency and un
reasoning zeal from the just conse
quences of their evil acts. The result
has been that public men have been
shielded by their own party, there has
been no fair and impartial criticism,
and wrong-doers have enjoyed compar
ative immunity.
“ To what extent politics and politi
cians have been corrupted by this
condition of things the shameful dis
closures of the past twelve mouths
testify in part, while the unpublished
scandals of the national capital, famil
iar to every one who has spent any
time in Washington during the sessions
of Congress, illuminate the subject
still more largely.
“ It is not necessary to dwell upon the
special case in hand. Our subject is an
swered in directing the attention of the
people to the unclean life of the bril
liant but unprincipled man who occupies
the chair of the United States Senate,
and who from his high position should he
a worthier example to the youth of the
land.
“ If Mr. Carpenter has been aggrieved
by any publication in our columns, he
has his remedy at law, and whatever
damage a jury of his countrymen shall
say his character has sustained will he
promptly paid. More than that, the
Tribune will gladly pay any sum that
may be so assessed in damages to be
convinced that the character of Mr.
Matt Carpenter is such that he does the
Senate no disgrace by presiding over it,
and that his life and conduct are such as
may he held up for example instead of
a warning to the young men of the coun
try. For proof of that the Tribune is
quite ready to pay liberally.”

I air engaged in tho manufacture of tho cele

the Calhoun Liver and Anti-Bilious Pills, under
the supervision and assistance of Dr. Calhoun
himself. This Pill has been in use for the last
thirty-five years, and has taken precedence over
all other family preparations, by all who have
used them. Thousands would certify to their
great valuo if nocess&rj. One fact should super
sede any amount of evidence, and that fact is
this—Dr. Calhoun has been physician to Fulton
county prison for over seven years, when the
number of prisoners ranged from 20 to 70, with
all the diseases incident to this climate. With
but few exceptions they have all been treated
with this pill, and astonishing to say, daring that
long period, not a solitary death occnnfed under
his treatment. This fact is worth any amount
of testimonials.
