Homicide In Cherokee County, Alabama.
We learn that Mr. A. M. Carrol, who
lived in Pollard’s Bend, was found
dead near Garrett’s Ferry, in Cherokee
county, Alabama, last Tuesday morn
ing. He had a quarrel with a Mr.
Elder, late Monday evening, near the
place where his body was found, and
suspicion fell upon hilU.
Mr. Elder was arrested, and no proof
being produced against him, he was
discharged. Since then we are in
formed that he has disappeared from
the county.

Rome Market, Dec. S.—We have a
better feeling to note in the market to
day than pervaded Saturday, notwith
standing the decline in New York.
We quote New York middlings 14
cents; low middlings 13} cents; good or
dinary 12} cents.
We have no telegraph market reports
to present to-day.
Died.—In this city, on Saturday, the
Gth inst., Mrs. S. A. Sanford, an old and
highly respected lady of our city.
Great Decline in Dry Goods, Boots, Shoes,
Notions, Clothing, etc.
W. M. & J. A. Gammon have just
received large invoices of the above
goods from New York at panic prices,
and are now offering them for less money
than they have ever been sold for in
this market before.
We seU prints, the best, at 10 cents
good yard wide bleaching, 12 cents; Sea
Island domestic, 10 to 12 cents. Every
thing else proportionately cheap. Our
terms are cash.
W. M. & J. A. Gammon.
Mary Carter.—If the weather con
tinues favorable the steamer “ Carter”
will be launched this week, and ready
to commence making her regular trips
about the first day of January, if the
stockholders will pay up their stock.
They certainly will do this—at least
we hope they will, for it is a very im
portant enterprise to this section of the
State, to say nothing of the counties
through which the boat will run.
We hope the boat will be a credit to
the builder, and to her whose name she
will bear.
Improve Your Stock.
We have advocated the improvement
of stock, and have tried to convince
our readers that it costs no more to
raise fine stock than it does scrub stock,
and that it was easier to sell a fine
blooded cow for 8100 or 8150 than it
was to sell a scrub for 820 or 825.
As an evidence of this fact, J. B.
Sullivan last week sold a young cow
to R. R. Asbury, of Tnlladega, Ala., for
S150, and a young bull for $115—de
livered on the cars here; and could
sell 100 such cattle for 8100 each with
out any trouble.
It costs no more to raise and keep
such than it does an imperfect grade:
This being so, why is it that there is
not more attention and care paid to
that branch of industry?
A Pleasant Remedy.
The change in the weather has given
every one colds, coughs, sore throats,
hoarseness, etc. Instead of using nau
seous medicine stews, and villonous
compounds, use the Globe Flower
Cough Syrup. This pleasant and mag
ical syrup for colds, coughs, croup,
whooping cough, asthma, bronchitis
and consumption, is by chemical skill
extracted ttum tho rpphalanthus occiden-
tnlis of the botanist, the Globe Flower
of the florist, or the Button Root of the
herbalist.
Neglect a cold and pay cithor a
doctor’s or undertaker’s bill. The list
of diseases arising from a simple cold
is frightful, and may be avoided by
having always at hand a bottle of
Globe Flower Syrup, which is equally
and certainly effective for all stages of
lung and bronchial disorders, from a
simple cold to a confirmed consump-
tion.
Be wise in time — ’tis madness to
defer. Next day the fatal precedent
may plead, and you may drop into an
early grave—all for want of one bottle
of Globe Flower Syrup. Remember
this, for your life may be saved; and
with sound lungs and a healthy organi
zation, live to bless its discovery and
praise its virtues. 8a2b2
A Card.
It has been my aim to furnish the
citizens of Rome and of the surround
ing country with a good school. The
classes of the Rome Female College
have been thoroughly taught, and a de
cided parental government has been
sustained. It is my desire to build up
the institution to a higher standard of
excellence, prosperity and usefulness,
In this great work I need the co-ope
ration of parents and guardians; a good
local patronage is essential to the life
anti growth of the College.
I gratefully acknowledge the liberal
ity of your support in the past, and
earnestly solicit it for the future. I
need the patronage of those who are
able and willing to pay promptly the
expenses of their children. The insti
tution cannot be sustained without it.
Some parents who are anxious for the
education of their children may not be
able to comply strictly with the terms
of the school. They are requested to
confer with me on the subject. We ob
viously need mntual sympathy, confi
dence and earnest co-operation, modi
fied by generosity and justice.
Pupils wiR be received at any time.

Incendiary Work.—We regret to
learn that the barn and wagon shed
of Mr. Jonathan J. King, of this coun
ty, was burned last Saturday night,
including some two bales of seed
cotton, wagons, gear, oats, etc. Loss
S750. It was evidently set on fire by
some person with evil intent.
Married.—At Presbyterian church
in Dalton, on Wednesday, the 3d inst,
Mr. Thos. R. Jones and Miss Gertrude
Manley—all of Dalton.
Tom is a good fellow, and we wish
him and his beautiful and highly
accomplished bride long life with all
sorts of good luck and unalloyed hap
piness.
The Reporter says that the “colored
troops” of LaGrange have been greatly
disturbed of late by this Cuban busi
ness : General G. T. Anderson, of At
lanta, better known as “ Old Tige,” was
in town, and some of “the boys” in
troduced him to two or three negroes
as a general whom Grant hod sent out
to raise a brigade of colored troops.
This created considerable excitement
in the minds of some of that class, es
pecially when General Anderson told
them to be ready next Saturday, os he
had the names of all the Grant voters
and would require them to start to Cu
ba at once. They protested that they
did not vote for Grant; that they never
shot a gun or a pistol, and did not know
how to shoot even a popgun.
An Irishman has defined nothing to
be a “footless stocking without legs.”
A description by another Emetalder is

“Shut your eyes and youHsee it,”
answered Pat.

Italian Immigrants. — Th5 move
ment to bring Italian immigrants to
Sdoth Carolina seemsto have tnet with’
considerable success. The gentleman
in Charleston who has the matter in
charge has received a letter from Spar
tanburg, where it is proposed to estab
lish a colony. The writer states that
he is sanguine of being able to effect the
arrangements for two colonies of im
migrants in that section.
Mr. Zilio, a member of the Italian
Emigration Labor Exchange, of New
York, will be in Charleston in a few
days for the purpose of making further
arrangements for an additional number
of immigrants.—Augusta Chronicle.

A Manual of Health.
An edition of between nine and ten millions
of copies of a very useful work is now ready for
gratuitous distribution, and can be had for the
asking at any drag store |n the United States,
the British ColoniM, Spanish America or Brazil.
The work referred to is Hostetter’s Almanac for
1874. The medical portion of it treats of the
various ailments io which the human system is
subject, and sets forth the peculiar properties of
Hoitettcr's Stomach Bitten—the purest and best
tonic at present known*— as a preservative of
health and strength, and a remedy for debility
and disease. The Almanac is printed in all the
principal languages of the civilized world, and
reaches a larger number o! families and indi
viduals than any other medical treatise that
ever issued from the press. No man or woman
who has due regard for that choicest of heaven’s
blessings, bodily vigor, should fail te read .the
plain, simple and convincing, articles which
this trnly practiced publication contains. The
miscellaneous matter is varied, instructive and
amusing, and the calendar department copious
and comprehensive. Hostctter’s Almanac is, in
short, a household convenience, adapted to the
use of all classes and callings. The farmer, the
planter, the miner, the merchant, the mechanic,
the laborer, the professional man, all need it;
and to invalids of both sexes it is literally an
article of prime necessity. The medical tech
nicalities which now render so many medical
treatises intended for popular ure unintelligible
to the general reader, have been carefully avoid
ed iu this pamphlet. All is clear, explicit,
forcible, and reconcilable with science and
common sense.
The publishers, Messrs. Hostetter A Smith,
Pittsburgh, Pa., will on receipt of a two cent
stamp, send the Almanac by mail to any address.
Persons should not only procure it for them
selves, but direct it to be sent to their friends
and neighbors, as a favor and valuable service
to them. delBjanl

WILLIS WALKER
I an* engaged in the manufacture of the cele
brated Family Medicine, at Atlanta, known as
the Calhoun Liver and Anti-Bilious PiUs, under
the supervision and assistance of Dr. Calhoun
himself. This Pill has been in use for the last
thirty-fire years, and has taken precedence over
all other family preparations, by all who hare
used them. Thousands would certify to their
great value if neeessary. One feet should sap er-
sede any amount of evidence, and that fact is
this—Dr. Oalhoun has been physician to Fulton
county prison for over seven years, when the
number of prisoners ranged from 20 to 70, with
all tha diseases incident to this climate. With JS MONEY ! MONEY!
but few exceptions they have all been treated
with this pill, and astonishing to say, during that
long period, not a solitary death occurred under
his treatment This fact is worth any amount
of testimonials.
