TATIVES.
The Washington correspondent of
the Telegraph and Messenger gives the
following as the make up of the next
House of Representatives : He says
the next House will, of course, show
peat reduction in the Demociatic tua
? joritv in this, but that majority will bn
ample for the practical purpose of or-
canization. Thus far 290 members of
t^ fourty-fifth Congress have been cho
sen, of which numoer 148 are Demo
crats anti 142 Radicals, showing
Democratic majority of 6. New
Hampshire has not yet elected her rep
resentative in that Cot gress, will do so
; n March. Her prisent delegation
stands two Democrats and one Radical
bat this proportion will most probably
be reversed in the fourty-fifth Congress,
making a probable total ofl49 Demo
crats, and 144 Radicals, If the Radi
cals carry all the districts the count
will stand 14S Democrats and 145 Rad
icals and leave the Democrats still with
a majority of three, whieh will be quite
sufficient to secure the organization.
W hen that is secured, it will be easy
to increase the majority by throwing
out two Louisiana Radicals who wer>
counted in by the Returning Board in
face of 0,000 Democratic majority in
one and 1,000 in another district, and
the two from Florida who were also
Hjounted j n over the popular verdict.
Bihere are also two or three more ol
lie faithful who will have to go, so
■hat it is altogether safe to estimate the
inal Democratic majority at not less
ian twelve or fifteen, which i3 ample
Birail practical purposes. Apropos of
e next House it seems pretty general-
conceded that Mr. Randall will be
s own successor in the Speaker's chair
lad also that the rest of the present
"fleers of the House will be rechosen.

A RADICAL APPOINTED.
“The Columbus Enquirer is justly in
dignant over the fact that Governor
Smith has re-appointed R. L. Mott, of
that place a3 one of the four Trustees of
the Lunatic Asylum. Colonel Mott, is a
leading Radical of the State. He is

them. He has voted for Grant every
time he was a candidate; and boldiysus-
taids him in all his bajunet proceedings.
He is a full-fledged Radical, and has
never raised his voice against the acts
doings of the military despot now crush
ing the South. Yet Governor Smith se
lects this man from 200,000 Georgians for
position of honor and truit. As
Georgian, as a Democrat we protest.
And yet the Governor of a Democratic
State, warms a political viper iuto life,
and calmly makes arrangements to be

The above we find accredited to the
Ailanta Constitution, and we re-produce
for the purpose of rebuking the nar
row-minded, bigoted spirit that it displays.
The office of Trustee of the Asylum is
uot a political one, and no man with a

To the Editor of the Courier :
The painful suspense the people have
been called upon to endure for the last
fortnigh, has doubtless many causes. And
there have been many conflicting rumors
concerning the result of the late strug
gle. One thing, however, has been settled
beyond the shadow of a doubt, and that
1 is the triumphant election of Tilden and
Hendricks. The Democratic candidates
are elected by a popular majority of more
than 309,009, besides enough electoral
votes to elect them. Under such circum
stances, then, the question naturally
arises, “ what is the trouble ?” Why is it
that this matter is not definitely settled,
and the country relieved of a suspense
prejudicial to its best interests ? Some
people imagine that was a very close elec
tion. The popular verdict does not seem
to favor such a theory. If there is any
thing dose about tne iats election, it is
m the electoral vote and that was made
so by Radical fraud anti rascality. One
grand rehson for this suspense is because
the Radical leaders are now engaged in
the effort to throw out a sufficient num
ber of electoral votes at the South to de
that Tilden and elect Hayes. Such a feat
will require sometime, and a certain
imonnt of engineering and hence thif
present suspense. It was admitted some
-ine ago that the States of South Caro
lina, Florida and Louisiana, were to de
cide the election. Those States are now
pretty generally conceded to have gone
Democratic; hence, as a mutter of
course, the Democratic candidates are
elected. But will they be seated ? That
is the question. We shall see. We
think it is now about time for the people
speak out in meeting.” Ttia' mere
is an attempt now being made to cheat
the people out of their choice, we enter-
ain not the shadow of a doubt;-ami the
mau who thinks differently has more faith
in the honesty of the Radical leaders than
have. Such a demonstration, how
ever, will be morally certain to fail. The
rent Democratic party is bound to seat
its candidates fairly and legally elected
and no earthly power can prevent it. It
is a significant fact that the theatre of
di-mute is confined to those States South
which have been cursed with 'Radical
^pet-bag rule ever since the close of
the war, namely, South Carolina, Flori
da ahx Louisiana. The reason of this is
obvious. The Radical leaders imagine
that those-States can be scared into terms
without mucihrouble, while the remainder
itie States Sooth, as well as North, they
imagine, will mini, their own busines:
This seems to be a v*- rM “r ””"T n ,~
ment, and v- - ‘ nore fata! ml " take could
hardly be made.
With such thieving scalawags as Kel
logg, of Louisiana, Stearnes, of Florida,
and Chamberlain, of South Carolina,
to do the engineering, a large amount
of dirty work may be expected, but
that will be about all. They will be
quite likely to do themselves more
harm, in the end, than anybody else.
If, however, the Radical leaders felt
certain they had the power to forcibly
abrogate and ignore tha verdict of the
people, they would not hesitate a mo
ment in making the attempt. But a
verdict of more than 300,000 had better
be let alone. We may be thought un
charitable, but it is our honest convic
tion that if the Radical leaders were
certain they could seat Hayes by in
augurating war, the sword would be
unsheathed in thirty d lys. The Radi
cal leaders are now just trying the
people, in order to ascertain whether
or not the latter will permit .their ver
dict set aside; and no sooner would
they discover a willingness on the part
of the people to surrender than they
would peremptorily make the demand.
But, the people will not surrender.
