Cairo, in Egypt.
Appleton's Journal for December.
Cairo is the queeu of Eastern cities.
Striking her roots deep down into the
rich mould of Arab antiquity, Bhe is
rapidly blossoming into a splendid
nineteenth-century flower; for her the
most Occidental of Eastern rulers hap
wrought his Western tastes into
and stone, and has created the* system
of administration which " last give
Egypt the benefits of enlightened gov
ernment. Several of the city’s quar
ters have been modernized ; the Eske-
bieb, with its gloomy and forbidding
Copt quarter, its scraggy palms and
filthy marsh,'has been completely trans
formed; the old meidan now blossoms
luxuriantly under tne bands of a French
gardener, the narrow canal being turn-
t-d into a beautiful lake; and the eutire
square having become a paradise of
green turf, cool walks, tinkling cas
cades, sparkling over with cafes and
theaters, and vocal with the mnsic of
military bapds. All around the Eske-
bieb, too, are fine boulevards and pub
lic buildings. Here are the Govern
ment ministries and imposing blocks
of European shops and dwellings.
Cairo is also Egypt’s social metropolis:
The traveler now, of whatever country,
may Bnd congenial mates, and allthe
concomitants of European life—good
hotels, bachelors’ quarters, pleasant
clubs, and opera-house, a French thea
ter, and even tables where he may stake
his money, although tne Khedive has
shrewdly refused to allow M. Blanc, the
play-king of Hamburg and Monaco, to
open a “Kursaal” in the city. Bnt tho
special winter delights are the drives
over tho Shootra road, a splendid ave
nue of acacias end sycamores, and the
frequent balls and concerts at the
palaces. -
Of these palaces the Khedive has
five around Cairo, but the Kasr-an-Nil,
on the right bank above, and the Ab
deen palace, in new Cairo, are the fa
vorites. The former consist of a large
central hall and two corridors on the
ground-floor, from which rises a ricn
and massive marble staircase- to the
great drawing-room and the chambers
above. The drawing-room is bewild-
eringly cluttered with costliest rugs,
ottomans and other furuishing, while
the walls are embellished with ghaatly
cracks and immense nail-holes, and
the massive doors are without paint.
Here the Khedive may look from one
window on the flower of his army in
their quarters scattered around the pal
ace; and from another he sees the Nile,
the very life of his empire, and beyond
the pyramids pointing solemnly to
heaven, and showing him that kings may
leave an immortal legacy after they
themselves are forgotten. The Abdeen
palace is a blaze of Eastern and modern
splendor. The walls are hung with
numberless mirrors till one man seems
a hundred. Four posters of silver,
marble fountains?gigantic chandeliers,
Pharaonic, Oriental, and Parisian fur
niture, matte the immense saloons gor
geous with the meeting of Egypt’s va
rious ages; while amid all the love ol
art and literature has scattered works
of every school and books of every
tongue.

He Couldn’t Drink Wine.
Dit oit Freo Frts?.
There was a noble youth who, on be
ing urged to take wine at the table of a
famous statesman in Washington, had
the moral courage to refuse.' - He was
a poor young man, just beginning the
struggle of life. He brought letters to
the great statesman, who kindly invited
him home to dinner.
“Not take aglasstif wine?” said the
great statesman in wonderment and
surprise.
“Not one single glass of wine?”
echoed the statesman’s beautiful and
fascinating wife, as she arose, glass in
hand, and, with a grace that would
have charmed an anchorite, endeavored
to press it upon him.
“No,” replied the heroic youth, reso
lutely, gently repelling the proffered
glass.
What a picture of moral grandeur
that was! A poor, friendless youth,
refusing wine at the table of a wealthy
and famous statesman, even though
proffered by the fair hands of a beauti
ful lady.
“No,” said the noble young man, his
voice trembling a little, and his cheek
flushed. “I never drink wine, but (here
he straightened himself up, and his
words grew firmer) if you have got a
little good, old rye whisky, I don’t mind
trying a snifter!”
Did you ever notice how a bachelor
pauses and looks scared whenever in
thecouiseof his walks he happens to
encounter a baby carriage containing
twins? Well, if you should follow
that man, you would see him step out?
with unusually lively pace, humming
sweetly, “Ain't I glad I’m out of the
wilderness.” And a lew minutes later,
if you had the faculty of looking
through a brick wall, you would see
him sitting on his trunk in a scantily
furnished room in the top of a four-
—.sKtfy building, energetically sewiDg on
shirt buttons with a darning needle,
without the slightest profanity, and-
with a look of calm and quiet content
that an angel would like to borrow if
he was going to have his picture taken.

"Washington, Dec. 2.—The contest
in the Executive Sesssion of the Sen

Georgia was chiefly a tilt between
Conkliug and Senator Gordon. Conk-
ling firmly assailed the President’s pol

respectable Republican in Georgia

Gen. Gordon’s letter in respect to Huff’s
appointment was read, for the purpose
ot showing that Huff was set aside
merely because he was a Republican.
GeD. Gordon explained that his oppo

The glori’ of summer has gone by—
the beautiful greenness has become
withered and dead. Were this all—
were there no associations of moral
desolation—of faded hopes—of hearts
withering in the bosoms of the living—
connected with the decaying scenery
around us, we would not indulge in a
moment's melancholy. The season of
flowers will come again—the streams
will flow gracefully as before—the trees
will again toss their cumbrous heads of
greenness to the sunlight—and by mos
sy stone and winding rivulet the com
ing blossom will start up ut the bidding
of their guardian. But ihe human
heart has no change like that of nature.
It has no returning spring-time. Once
blighted in its hour of freshness, it
bears forever the mark of the spoiler.
The dews of affection anay fall, and the
gentle rain of sympathy he lavished

Those who commit crime seldom
look at more than one side of the bal
ance-sheet. Satan always shows the
gi!ded side of sin, and that side only,
when he tempts men; and when they
are drawn away by their own lusts
they take into account only the profit
they hope to derive from an evil course.
How otherwise could so many intelli
gent men cover themselves with dis-
race and plunge their families into a
sea of wretchedness for the doubtful
enjoyment or ill-gotten gains. We
wish every young man, and every old
