THE GOLDEN MILESTONE.
Leafless, are the trees; their purple branches
Spread tVmselvcs -.broad, like reefs o f coral,

In the red soa of the wintor sunset.

At the window winks the flickering firelight;
Here and there the lamps of evening glimmer
Social watch-fires
Answering one another through the darkness.
On the hearth lighted logs are glowing.
And like Arie< ia the cloven piae tree,
For its freedom
Groans and sighs the air impris >nei in them.
By the fireside the old men seated,
Seeing ruined cities in aah<»8.
Asking sadly
Of thd past whal it can ne’er rasto'e them.
By the fireside there are youthful dreame-s.
Building castles tair, with stately stairway?,
Asking blindly
Of the future what it cannot give them.
By the fireside tragedies are aemd

Wife and husband,
And atme them God, the spectator^
By the fire ide there is peace and comfort;
Wives and chiidr-n. with fair tV.u^htiul facte,

The Schoolhonse Tragedy.
The scene is laid within half a mile
of the Clay School. Twenty-one of
the lergest boys gathered in council in
one corner of the yard, and decided
that they were too big to be licked by
any school-teacher walking the face of
'he earth. After "arriving at this deci
sion a conspiracy was entered into.
The biggest boy in the crowd was to
bring on a conflict with the teacher as
-non as possible, and the other twenty
were to back him.
“Death to cowards!” shouted one, as
the plan was all fixed.
. “No backing down—no hesitation P’
cried another.
“A rush together—one wild yell—
one mad struggle, and victory will be
ours!” yelled the smallest of the lot.
It was a desperate plao.
The peboolhouse was not even de
fended by a Gatling gun.
It might be the commencement of a
rebellion which would not end until
■very school-house in the land was
turned into an establishment for the
sale of mourning goods.
Scene second came on fifteen min
utes later. The innocent teacher look
ed around upon her scholars without the
least suspicion that a ficrce Tebellion
was.bfewing. Tbe clock ticked the
■same as ever. The boy across the
street pounded on an old tin pan the
same as ever. The Mg conspirator was
suddenly seen to throw a paper wad
across the room.
He was ordered to come forward. He
said he didn’t wan’t to. 1 ' •
It was a moment of peril, but the
teacher didn’t realize it. She walked
down the aisle, took the big conspira
tor by the collar, and in ten seconds he
wondered whether he was down cellar
or up in the garret, while twenty other
boys grew white around the mouth,
bent to their lessons with renewed en
ergy, and mentally whispered:
“Be still, thou wildly-beating heart—
wait till I grow a foot or two more1”
The big conspirator is now thrashing
them in solemn succession. He reach
ed number eighteen yesterday.

Well-bred Parisians never treat. In

to whisky.
Edinburgh, Dec. 13.—The Scotsman’s
London correspondent telegraphs as
follows: From the most influential
quarter a suggestion has been before the
British Cabinet that Constantinople
will be made a free city, under a guar
antee of the European powers.
Everybody thought it was a match,
and so did he, and so did she; but Iasi
evening, at a croquet party, she hit her

Danbury News.
An experiment was recently tried in
Cincinnati to demonstrate that a pitcher
can pitch curved balls. It was also
demonstrated in Danbury in the past
week, but in the most simple way. A
slim man was standing on the corner
of Munson and Pine streets when the
clubs were coming in. Seeing the ball
in tlie hands of a friend he invited a
pitch. Tbe holder of the ball put one
foot ahead of the other, sbnt his lips
tight together, glared with awful feroc
ity at his friend, and then twisting his
arm twice from the shoulder to the ei-
bow, and four times from the elbow to
the wrist, let drive the deadly missile.
The slim man, who had intently
watched this mysterious preparation,
"a-' the ball was coming to his right,

In one of the Western States a‘ man
was brought into court on a charge of
assault and battery, presented by his
wife, and His Honor asked him why
ne.struck her.
“She called me a worthless, lazy loaf

“Well ?”
“She said our whole family weren’t
fit for fijih bait; but I didn’t get mad at
that.”' ■ ,
“What was it theD ?”
“She shook her fist under* my nose,
id said I was too lazy to- die, but I
kuow’d she was excited and I let. that
pass. She’s got a fearful temper,
your Honor.”
“I wish to know if you had sufficient
cause for provocation,” said the conrt.
“I guess I had, Judge. She came close
up,.Spit in my face, and said I was
meaner than pizen; but I didn’t hit her
for that.”
“What then ?”
“I knowed her temper, and I sot
there and whistled ‘Hold the Fort,’ and
I was bearing with her, when she turned
round and gin my coon dog thesmash-

outer his head. That fetched me.

London. Dec. 12.—The estimated
