rab MUSES RETREAT.
|Rk following lines iv ere compofol by a gentle -
flrLm if New- York , W presented to a young
ttm/Mjady refilling in a town on the banks oj
HV \liudfon s River.
Hvdsom ! I'm enamour’d with thy
mv ft,-earn ;
vome dcarefl r.vcr, he my darling theme ;
thee, and thy rugged bank 1 , approve,
tlicy produce the maid I dare not love,
|Hr isi thy bolom, on thy csilern (ide,
S >lia lprang and grew of thy proud ltream the pride,
sraf Among thy willow:, and thy laurels there,
jrak This lovely Miss firfl diew the vital air j
(lie her prattling, playlul ilories told,
la* d lung her littla fon°., and on thy margin ftroll’d. |
KjjTherediJ the waves dance tiptoe as they paff’d,
frr l*»f’d with the (oim of futh a fii.ilh’d call ;
■ftrl’herc did thy gentle-breathing zephyrs blow
rapt 1I t llaxcn hair, and taught it how to flow
graceful gambols, and luxuriant taste,
n» ]
I'*: Along her lovely neck and down her waste.
|JJ And with what whiteness didst thou wash the pearl,
|tl
• Tint form’d the tern of this thy favorite girl!
And wall wlnt radiance did the morning (liine,
j Which ting’d that snow with blulhes fj d vine !
f Tticre, Hud lon too, for her, as I i'ufpedl,
J Thy trembling waves did two bright liars rcfledl,
J lor when she I'miles on me, my foul deferies
1 Two lparks of heaven glittering in her eyes,
if And well I ween, her coral lips were made
t)f two moist rubies from thy oozy bed.
ON A LOCK. OF HAIR,
fR ECIO US gift of friendfhip dear!
Sacred plcJge, forever new!
Withgratclul rupture moll lincerr,
Lver welcome to my view.
To the giver’s virtues raie,
L, Sense and matehlefs worth of foul,
'J’i y, chafing gant uifpiir,
u Lver ready to condole.
Round my neck the braid I tie':
Not the radiant diamond clear,
Nor orient pcails, with thee tan vie,
Or form a neckahe half so dear.
CHARACTER OF A TERMIGANT.
SHE (peaks poignards, and every
word Rabs. If her breath were as terrible
as her terminations, there were no living
near her file would infefl the north Rar.
I would not marry her, tho’ Hie were en
dowed with all that Adam had left him be
fore lie tranfgreflcd. She wouid have
made Hercules have turned spit; yea, and
have cleft his club to make the fire too.—
Should flic come this way, will you com
mand me any service to the world’s end?
3 would go on the flighted errand to the
antipodes, that you can devise to feud me
f;n. I will fetch you a tooth picker from
tlh hyrhelt inch in A fin; bring \oti the
length of J’rt fler John’s foot; fetch you a
hair of tne great Cham’s beard, do you any
rmbalTage to the pigmies, rather than hold
three words of conlerreuce with the hap-
Shakespere.
THE TRUE AMBITION OF
A N H ONES T MIN D.
WERE I to deferibe the blessings I de
sire in life, I would be happy in a few,
but faithful friends. Might I choose m\
* iknt, it fliould rather be good sense than
learning, I .would consult, in the choice
of my hhnle, convenience rather than
Rate; and for mv cir; umftances, desire a
moderate but independent fortune. Bu
hnels enough to fecure.me from indolence,
and leifurc enough alway s to have an hour
io (pare. I would have no inafler, and 1
ddire but few servants, I would not be
led away by ambition, nor perplexed with
dHpufcs. I would enjoy the bleiling of
health, but would rather be beholden for
it to a regular life and an easy mind, than
the school of Hippodrates. As to my pas
sions Once we cannot be wholly dive Red
of them, 1 won Id hate only those whole
manners and aftions rendered them odi
ous, and love only where I know I ought.
1 hus wood I pal< chearfully througli that
portion of my life vs hich cannot laR al
ways, with refignatiotvwau for that which
will hR forever.
