bereavement.
A thought on tbs Death of
WASHINGTON the great !
TO attempt to speak what Wash
ington was, would be to try impofiibili
ties: For, no tint of words can spot hisfnowy
ciiara&er, no chymicpower turn his virtues in
to vices. He appeared to me, like one
partaking of the divine eflencc, purified
from the dregs of corruptible matter; and
that the Deity, being for along time sepa
rated from a particle of himfelf, thought
proper to call him from this sublunary
wrrld, and to unite all the atoms of the
spirit in one God.
Eulogiftsmay attempt to write his praise
—but, Herculean, indeed, would be the
lafk, and volumes would prove ineffec
tual, His merit is im prefled on our minds
—and his services, O Americans ! deeply
engraved on our hearts. said Ameri
cans pardon me ye citizens of the
world ! I include the wife and good of all
nations. Not time itfelf, devouring as it
is, in its rude march, will ever be able to
etface his memory. S
