PETERSBURGH, November 26.
This day’s Gazette contains the follow
ing excraft of dispatches from Constanti
nople, of the 29th of September :
“ Ten sale of the line and several other
veflels are fitting out here, which will pro
ceed to Alexandria in a few days, to reign
force the Turkifil squadron in that quarter,
consisting of 40fail.
“ After the defeat of Kara Muftapha
Pacha, near Abonrkir, the command de
volved upon Kufla Pacha, who had landed
near Aboukir with 30,000 men, and soon
afterwards took prisoners 200 French, who
had been cut off from the rest. The
Turks, encouraged by this success, ad
vanced, and met with another detachment
of 500 French troops, who pretended to
withdraw behind their works. Soon an
other body of troops, of 5000 men, drefted
like mamdukes, arrived, who pretended to
make an attack upon the French corps.
The Turks who thought them to be fomc
of the troops of Murat Bey come to join
them, drew nearer, but on their arriving
on the spot where the French wiflied them
to be, a mine, prepared for that purpose,
blew np—Thofe who were not deftrpy
ed bv this contrivance, dispersed from fear,
and were either killed or taken prisoners.
Among the latter was Kufla Pacha.
“ At Alexandria, the French made use
of a fnnilar stratagem. The green flag
was hoisted there, and a French corps, dref
ftd in the manner above mentioned, en
tered the gates. The commanders of rhe
Turkifil fleet thought the fortefs had sur
rendered, whichthey approached with the
utmost confidence, but were welcomed
wiih the mod dreadful fire, and several
fitips funk on the spot.”
NEW-YORK, April r.
By letters received the week paftat We

iC'apt. Tryon, in the United States (hip
Connefticut, has funk a French ftiip of 18
guns, and driven on fliore a privateer
lchooner of 14 guns.—The aboveaccou.it
is derived from such a source that there is
no doubt of its truth.

1 x.'raff rs a letter from on board the Baltimore
jloop of war, dated
“ Bafleterre, St. Chriftophers,
February 18, 1800.
“ Being just on the point of failing with
n convoy for the United States, I embrace
the opportunity of informing you of what
' has transpired in these seas since we have
| arrived. Nothing material happened on
I the palfdge, and we had very pleat'ant wea
t ther. The Baltimore, is generally emplov-
Itd In convovingour merchantmen out of
Ithe reach of the French pirate ; we have,
Allow ever, after the fleet a good opportunity
■of cruizing.
“ On the 19th December last, to wind
ow -IX‘l of Redondo Rock and Montferat,
live took a French copper-bottomed brig
I.loAded with fine sugar, from Guadaloupe
l| oor.n \ to St. Thomas, and brought her in
II
here, from whence (lie is to be sent to
Norfolk with the present fleet! Since
that time we difguiied our ftiip, bv con
cealing our guns, putting wooden ones on
the upper deck, and painting her, so as to
look like a letter of marque.
“ On the 13th January, cruizing to
windward of Defeada, saw a schooner,
which bore down upon the Baltimore; af
ter taking a look at the ftiip a little distance
ff, (he came along fide, so near that her
men were seen with boarding implements
in their hands. Captain Cowper immedi
ately opened his battery and gave her two
broad sides, upon which die (heered off
and endeavored to get away ; but conti
nuing to fire our bow guns, (one ball from
which wounded her lieutesant severely in
the arm, pafied through her companion
and struck her in mainmast) the (truck.
“ Next day saw another French priva
teer, who came down in the famemanner,
within pistol (hot, when he was received
with round, grape and canister (hot so
warmly, that his quarters were soon level
led with his deck; he being full of men,
with 16 guns returned gun for gun and a
(bower of mu/ketry, which killed one of
the marines, (the (hot palling through his
left wrist and lodging in his heart at the
instant he*difcharged his mulket) and in
jured the Baltimores rigging considerably.
He was chaced till night, but afreidof los
ing the prize, gave up the chace. We
have since learned that (lie loft 35 men, and
threw his boat," anchor, cables, &c. &c.
overboard, before file got off. Her crew
was 130 in number.
“Commodore Truxton has arrived here,
and commands the squadron on this ftati
-011, consisting oftheConftcllation, Adams,
John Adams, Connefticut, Baltimore, Ea
gle, Pickering, Enterprize, &c. The
Connefticut, which is reckoned the faded
failing veflel we have, has taken a French
brig called D‘ltalie Conque, of 16 nine
pounders, and has been cruizing four
years, during which (he took more than
150 prizes. She fired into the Connefti
cut, which was returned with several
broad-(kies, which (hot away her fore top
mad and wounded the captain in thefore
head, upon whichthey all ran down into
the hold, leaving two American captains
(prisoners) on deck, who put the helm up
and hauled down her colors, just as the
Connefticut was about firing another
broadside. The French brig’s rigging
was cut to pieces. She has since been
fitted out here and manned from L’lnfur
gente, is now cruizing, and recaptured the
William and Mary, a Liverpool (hip. \
“ The brig Eagle, a few days ago, dis
ced two French privateers, but finding
their force double his own, did not think
prudent to engage, bur continued his
course ; after receiving a number of (hot
from them.
“ P. S. I forgot to mention a circum
stance which occurred whilst I was on
hoard the Adams. On the 24th February
about sunset, saw a brig from themafthead,
to which we immediately gave chace ; a
bout 10 havinggainedon her confiderablv,
(lie continually made falfe fires. At 12
fired several (hot at her, but (lie kept on
her course. At 2 came up with her, when
(lie fired her stern chafes into us, which
was immediatly returned by two broad
sides from the Adams. Hailed her and
ordered the Captain on board with his pa
pers, which he immediately complied with;
(lie proved to be the British privateer
John Bull, of 4 thirty-two pounders and
to fixes.”
