'~~~A U G U S T A,
WEDNESDAY, April zj , i Soo.
IN the violence of Jacobinical dec
lamation against the American goyern
nient, the attention of our citizens has of- .
ten been direfted to the French nation as
exhibiting an example of pure republican
ism, and as preserving undiminished the
principles of “ Liberty and Equality.”—
The wisdom of that government has been
extolled, the justice of its administration
applauded, its corruptions attempted to be
explained away, and all its measures jufti
fed. Notwithflanding the despotic pow
er pofleffed by the Diredory, and the more
than royal parade with which they were
attended, notwithflanding their will was
their only guide, and constitutional boun
daries no obstacle to their proceedings;
vet were they often brought into contrast
with the executive of the United States,
infruitlefs efforts to establish their superi
or wisdom and virtue. That government
was considered as permanent as the ever
lading hills, and Buonaparte was hailed
as the deliverer of his nation, and the
standard of republican perfedion. Ob
serving men however aflented not to these
excellencies, they discovered the principles
of diflolution thickly incorporated in the
political system, and expeded new chang
es to occur in an unsettled and restless na
tion. This however was deemed the opi
nion of the enemies of the “ Rights of
Man,” and the friends of aristocracy.
Events however, have precluded the ne
ceflity of reasoning on this fubjed, and
opinions have been iuperceded by fads,
and those fads convey to the worid a fo
letnn, an all important lesson.
BUONAPARTE, the virtuous child
If freedom, the modest unafTuming repub
lican, returns from an unjust expedition,
Is received with joy by the French nation,
■wears to support the constitution of his
Bountry— becomes the commander of the
■uards of the legislative body—marches
with his grenadiers into the hall of the
Bounc'd of five hundred—silences delibe
rations—turns the members out of doors,
■eclares the constitution to have perished, ’
■lefts himfelf into the executive office
Proclaims abroad that he is called to the
Bead of rhe French nation by the wishes
B the French people, prepares a conftitu-
Bon, in forming which, the people have
Bo voice; submits it for unconditional accep
■*«, assigns fubmijjion to the citizens as
■leor.ly part they are required to take in
■ s new compad. This is the boasted go
■rnment of freedom—this the virtuous
■Public we have often been called upon
■ imitate, this the “ Liberty and Equali.
■’which has ftad so many supporters and
■ends in the United States.
1 AMONG the firft measures of the
■w government, we observe an arrette li
■'bng the number of papers to be printed
■ t!ie nation—prohibiting the publication
■ any journals not specially permitted—
■qmring thole licenced, to be printed by
B enc h citizens—and ordering an instant
■ppreffion of those that tend to insult the
■ C!S I compad, the sovereignty of the
See. what will be the Duane’s—
■ Allen’s, the Callender’s of America
B to this? How would such papers as
B Aurora, the Argus, the Bee and the
a miuer, be treated in this virtuous re
this enlightened Government ?
■ ' ’ v ’ou!d Citizen Duane, Citizen Dal-
Cooper and Citizen M’Kean,
H :;r iated were they suddenly transported
B°' Jir favourite land of freedom, and there
■mdulgg themselves in their dispositions
B v ‘ f u!ence, feurrility and abuse ? or
tney dare offer to that government
they so liberally bestow on this.
■ HEN we fee these men pretend to
extreme solitude for the rights of their fcl
iow-citizens, and in their vigilance to pre
ierve the constitution unimpaired, villify
ing the constituted authorities of ourcoun
trv ; we may rest allured that so far from
having the good of the people in view,
their aim is to advance themselves by the
total deftrudion of our excellent con
stitution.
