ML, THOMAS CAMPBELL, a young man, notmore
wL than twenty years of age, who has just given the
Hr world a specimen of h;s Poetic Powers, in a Poem,
mi tailed “THE PLEASURES OF HOPE.” It
H ,1 a compaction; in which imagery the most lub-
Ht lime, and feenej the most limple and ender, are
delineated with the (kill ol a iji'tftpt'. Ol the latter,
Bj yvc give the following fine picture ot a Mother at the
, cradle ol her deeping Infant:—
LO ! at the coucfcwhere infant beauty llecps,
ft H cr silent watch the mournful mother keeps;
.1 She, while the lovely babe unconscious lies,
I Smiles on her little son with pensive eyes,
I And weaves a long of melancholy joy—
-1 “ Sleep, image of thy father, deep my boy;
I Noling’ring hour of i’ori ow dial! be thine :
I No sigh that rends thy father’s heai t and mine,
I Bright as his manly fire, th*don dull be,
I In form *and foul; but, ah ! more bled than he !
I Thy fame, thy worth, thy filial love at lad,
Shall fool he this aching heart for all the pad:
| With many a (mile my foliiule repay,
And rhafe the world’s ungenerous scorn away.
“ And lay, when summoned from the world & thee,
I lay my head beneath the willow tree ;
Wilt thou, sweet mourner! at my done appear
And sooth my parted l'pirit lingering near ?
Oh ! wilt thou come, at evening hour to did
The tears of memoiy o’er my narrow bed;
With aching temples, on thy hand reclifi’d,
Muse on ihc lad farewel l leave behind, *
Breathe a deep sigh to winds that murmur low,
And think on all my love, and all my woe ?”
So speaks affedtion, ere the inl.uu eye
Can look regarJ, or brighten in reply.
ANECDO TE S.
SOME time ago, a certain Lord (in
Ireland) gave a grand gala to the members
ofthc volunteer corps in the neighborhood,
all of whom attended in full uniform.
Among others, his lordships tailor was pre
sent, and the host came up to him faying,
“My dear fir, howd’ye do? I beg your par
don, I forget your name, but I perfectly
recollfft feeing you forr.e where before.”
The tailor was a little confounded by this
particular notice, and, as the best way of
making himfelf remembered, whispered,
“ 1 made your breeches.” The noble
lord, thinking the tailor had informed him
of his name, turned round and took him
by the hand, exclaiming,“ Major Bridg
es ! lam happy to fee you.”
During the retreat of the Britilh troops
on the 7th October while they were floun
cing through the mud in a part of the road
uncommonly bad, the rommandingodicer
called out to the men to form “ two deep”
—“ Damme ! ((bouts a grenadier from
bet Ween two mountains of nmd) I am
“ too deep ” already ; I am up to the neck !
