AUGUSTA HERALD.
TUESDAY, MARCH 17, ists.
THE arrival of the ship Sallt, at
Charleston, from Liverpool, in a passage of
o 8 days, has furnished European accounts
nearly a month in advance of any previous
( If received ; but the most material part
the intelligence contained iu the papers ip
pears to be of a commercial nature. Some
letters to this place, state a little depression
i in the price of upland cotton in the Europ'-
| ean markets, while the Sea Island is stated
j to have advanced ; both however we hope
will still cominaud a saving price to pur
chasers here.
The Message of the President of the
United States at the opening of Congress, is
published iu the London papers, and as stat
ed by the Charleston Courier, “ with flatter
ing remarks upon its amicable temper, and
the flourishing state of this country.”
The accounts from the Indian Nation re
cently received, our readers will find to be
of an unpleasant nature ; we hope a short
; time will furnish more pleasing intelligence
from that quarter.

SKIRMISH WITH TUB IXDUXS.
The following was received this evening by
Express to the Governor :
Hartford, March 10, 1818.
Sir— l have this moment received infor
mation through Mr. lsltani Jordau. of Tel
■■ f lir county, which I rely on, of a skirmish
between the Indians and some of the citizens
i of Telfair on the south side of the Oaktnul
gee river in the afternoon of the 9th instant,
20 or 25 miles below this.
I On the night of the 3d inst. Joseph Bush
and his son were fired upon by a party of
Indians, the father killed and the son sev
| erely wounded and scalped, but he so far re
covered as to reach home in two days after,
j The citizens receiving information of the
foregoing facts, assembled on the 9th inst.
to the number of 36, and crossed the riv
er in the forenoon to seek redress. Fin
ding considerable sign of Indians, they pur
sued the trail leading from the river some
distance out, wlte're they came in view of a
i body of Indians, 50 or 60 advancing within
j gun-shot. The firing was commenced by
j each party and warmly kept up for three
| quarters of an hour. A part of the detachment
| effected their retreat, bringing off one badly
wounded—four are certainly killed : the bai-
I lance ofthe detachment has not been heard
from—Maj. Cothom (commandant of the
'Telfair militia) is among the missing. Four
Indians were killed.
From information, (he citizens below this
i are much alarmed and leaving their homes.
1 have thought proper to communicate the
foregoing to you by express.
1 am your Excellency’s most obedient ser
vant. >
RICH’D. H. THOMAS, Lieut. Col.
In aonseqrience ofthe foregoing, the Pul
aski Troop of Cavalry has been ordered out
by the Executive to scour the frontier and
afford protection to the inhabitants. The
Telfair detachment, we fear, has suffered
greatly and we shall rejoice, if all who are
missing have not perished. It would seem,
that the Indians, confiding in superior num
bers, had sought to draw out the militia, by
permitting the young man whom they scalp
: ed to reacli the settlement.
Travellers from the Alabama mention an
unpleasant report that has reached Fort-
Mitchell, in substance as follows: That
Gen’l Gainos, accompanied by his aid, Maj.
Wright, and others, in descending Flint
river to Fort-Seott, had their boat stove—
that Maj Wright was drowned, and Gen’l
Gaines, after having been seen to reach the
j shore by a soldier who swam to the opposite
: side, has not since been heard of, and is sop
! posed to have fallen into the hands of the
Indians. Although we do not eredit the
story, we still fear it may be true. Noth
ing had been heard of it at Hartford when
the express left there yesterday.
Milledgeviile, March 13.—A letter from
a gentleman iri Hartford tn his friend in this
place says —“ An express has just arrived
which contradicts the report of the drown
ing of General Gtines. 1 soldier was
drowned, which gave rise to the report.”
Our harbor, (says the Bostou Palladium
ofthe I3tli inst.) is almost entirely closed j
with ice. No vessels have been to enter or
departs from the port several days past.

The following opinion of the work was ex
pressed by the Hon. John Treadwell, late
Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut:—
“ At request 1 have perused Butler’s C»m
pend of General History, and think it prom
ises to improve the system of Education in
our common Schools, and of course is wor
thy of liberal patronage. It presents to the
young mind, ns in a general map, the whole
ground of the science of History, it
places those facts in the strongest light
which are the most interesting or impur- j
tant; and it will, 1 think, prove the basis of i
an orderly and progressive improvement in
| more mature life. It will bring the Icarn
-1 er to an early acquaintance with the Histo
rical and prophetical parts of sacred Scrip
ture, and in many events shew the accom
plishment of the latter; and it will serve to
keep in view the government ofGon in gen
