I T will be seen bj reference to the
late Foreign Intelligence in our col
umns of to-day, “ that tlie Neapolitans
have failed in their attempt to establish
a free government.” This information j
we submit to our readers, as affording
speculations of an interesting nature,
and being iood for the political mind.
How tar it may effect even in its pre
sent issue the crowned heads of Eu
rope, we are at a loss to conjecture, so
unstable indeed are revolutions and
counter revolutions.

FOR THU HERALD,
“ Ah, what n shame were this ! look on the boy.'’
Every individual is iu the habit of pro
nouncing sentence upon the merits of others.
Superiority is ascribed to this man, for the
possession of amiable moral qualities ; ano
ther is eulogized for intellectual pre-emin
ence ; and a third ucXiolled for excellence
in the display of a single talent, or of per
sonal accomplishments. Sometimes, these
opinions are hastily formed ; frequently, un
| der the influence of prejudice, or favor ;
and always, by minds characterized by differ
ences in taste. Hence, it is nui strange,
that so great diversities in sentiment should
be found, respecting every subject, Vlieu
first presented to tiie criticisms of tlie pub
lic.
Human excellence is relative ; to form a
just decision, therefore, every circumstance
should receive us appropriate consideration.
Convinced of the truth of these observa
tions, the writer invites every triend lo ge
nius and talent, to canvass,’on the principle
above stated, the pretensions of master
Geohok Freueki ck Smith, to tile character
of an actor.
V\ hat, then, are the peculiar circumstan
ces in lus case, wortiiy of special regard >
First, Ins extreme youth : the writer, for
his own satisfaction, and prompted by ttie
extraordinary talents of tins boy, as display
ed in his public exhibitions, has taken pains
to know hi» history. His :ather, Peter Stu
art Smith, is a distinguished professor of mu- {
sir, a citizen ol Dublin, and a relative of the !
piesent Lord Castlereagb. George, the j
third son, was born in ibe city of Cork, Ire
land, in the month of December I«ll—mak
ing him nine years of age last December,
llis parents removed to Montreal, when
George was very young, where his mother,
two brothers, and two sisters stiff remain.
While at school in that city, at the early age
ot five years, he gave the first indicatiuns'of i
talents lor public speaking, llis fondness I
tor the art increased, with every opportuni- :
ty tor reciting, winch he enjoyed at school • |
until his parents, yielding, wuh much solici
tude, to die importunities of the boy, and j
the advice of friends, perind'-d him to stu
dy a character of Ins own selection, Doug- |
lass, which he personated on the Montreal 1
stage, three successive n ghts, v.,tn great •
applause. He has since play ed Itomeo, Uc- i
tav.au, Uicluid ill, amt other characters, j
Accompanied by his father, he arrived in
last lull, on his way lo tue soutii.
In that city he first saw Mr." Kean. This
event gave new impulse to llis geinus, and
formed a brighter era in the biography of i
the,boy. l’ltis great and accomplished mas- I
ter of the stage, at once admired the open- 1
ing talents ot this son of genius, and gave
him lessons. Die infant pupil imbibed the i

After spending some months in New-York
the father and son visited lioston, and thence \
directed their curse to tins part or the i
country, occasionally giving recitations, and |
playing, in the towns through which they i
passed. Owing to tins mode of life, George ;
has nad but little leisure fur any studies, but I
such us had immediate reference to the '
stage. Ilm mind is not therefore, supplied I
with resources acqmred by various study |

taste, and ability he discovers, must be eli- i
cited by the force of genius, unaided by dis
cipline, and unpolished by education.

his point would be a virtual admission that

principle ot imitation is very little employ

from .us private as well as public recitations,

j acter are far more just and perfect, than

I lie agilati m produced by tins speech
was such that the whole audience appeared
to have felt one convulsive emotion: and
whi nit was over, it was sometime before
Mr, Fox could obtain a hearing.
Amidst the assemblage of concurring
praises which this speech excited, none was
more remarkable than the tribute of Mr.
Hastings himself. “ For half an hour,” said
that gentleman, “ l looked up at t fie orator
