* Official information has been received
at the Navy Department, of the safe, ar
rival,at Valparaiso, of the United States’
frigate Constellation, Capt. Charles
G. llidgely, after a'passage of 44 days
from Rio de Janeiro; officers and crew
all well.—This is a truly satisfactory
refutation of the rumor of some days
past, unfavorable to the safety of this
Frigate.
* The United States’ schooner Shark
was launched Thursday morninsr, a
few minutes after ten o’clock, at the
Navy Yard in this city. She went off
in fine style, and had her masts in soon
after. Her measurement is about 180
tons; and she has been built under the
Jet of Congress for building, five such,
intended to be employed in the Gulf of
Mexico and the West India Seas.'

There has lately been invented and
patented in Paris, an extraordinary and
delightful Lamp, which is Called
u Lampe Meehanique ,” because that
the oil is raised to the burner by a
pump, which is worked by a clock
spring and a train of wheels, analagous
to a roasting jack, and regulated by a
fly.—The pump raises more oil than is
requisite; but the overplus descends
again into the well, so that the light of
the lamp is always the saitie, and in
variable. The jack is calculated to
work the pump eight hours without
winding up. The lamp i 3 shaped like
an' architectural column ; the jack is
concealed in its base, the pump in its
Shaft—the light is at the top, and co
vered with a globe of ground glass. The
ju ice of these lamps varies, according
to their external decoration, but the
machinery is thesame in all. Seventy
five francs is the least for which one
can be pur based, [Petersburg Int.
Singular Character. —A. M. Azais
just published at Paris a work" On
the Lot of Man in all Ranks of Life:
on the Lot of Nations in all Ages: and
more especially on the present Lot of
the French People.” In the preface is
the following invitation ?—“ I live in the
heart of Paris, in a solitary house, sur
rounded by a fine garden. Every day
for two hours I shall be at the disposal
of any person who may wish to procure
one of my books, and to discuss the
principles of it with me, from two to
four in winter, and in summer from six
until dusk. It will be very agreeable
to u*e to form by this means an acquaint
ance with the lovers of science and
philosophy; to stroll with them in my
little domain, to reply to their questions
and observations; and to profit by the
information which they may give me or
which they may excite me to for myself.
If I could venture to iuvent a word
which should describe the nature of our
confidential intercourse, I would say
that we will ‘platonize’ together, under
the constant guidance of nature and
philosophy. [Literary Gazette,

J The following is a summary of an in
l -teresting narrative which appeared in a
late Liverpool Mercury:—On the 20th
of March last, Miss Fell, a beautiful
young lady, 17 or 18 years of age, left
her father's house at Douglas, Isle of
Mail, and alter visiting several of her
relations, walked out alone, in a de
pressed state of mind. As she did not
return that night, the circumstance be
came the subject of general conversa
tion. The young men of the Island
immediately commenced a search, but
it was unavailing- At length the mys
tery was developed. About three miles
to the South of Douglas Head, the rocky
coast rises very high 5 hither she had
wandered, and while her mind was en
gaged in thought, slipped from the brink
and tell upon a shelving rock a con
siderable distance below. Her attempts
to regain the summit were fruitless, be
ing considerably injured by the fall.
The rock was surrounded by the sea,
the spray, often dashing over her. In
this situation she could not be seen from
the land, and. there was little chance of
her being discovered from the sea. On
this rock siie remained two days and
three nights. On the morning after the
third night she perceived a boat—her
voice was entirely broken, but she made
a signal with her handkerchief. It
caught the eyes of the boatmen, who
rowed towards the spot, and having
climbed, the rock, conveyed her to their
boat. She was almost insensible, and
the morning was piercing cold. The
boatmen stripped off their coat 3, and
making a bed, laid her down in the
boat, where she fell asleep. They con
veyed her home. Iler mother could
not endure the tide of affection that
rushed upon her mind at the restoration
of her daughter; she lost her reason,
and shortly after in a fit of derangement
put a period to her existence.
Italian Misery. “ The misery
which reigned at Sorrent. at the time of
my visit, was dreadful. (Jn going out
of the town, we saw a poor little boy
stretched out Under the hedge, and so
very weak already-that he had not even
strength to thank us for our assistance.
On returning from the mountain, 1 saw
another object of misery, a you **- man
of eighteen or twenty, so horribly tjiin
that his bones really seemed to pierce
Ins skin. He lay stretched on a rock,
m the distance of a mile from the town,
and far from the public road. I thought
at first that he had been sleeping, as°he
did not beg; and he saluted us as we
passed by him, in a tone of voice,
whose feeble indistinctness I attributed
rather to drowsiness, than hunger.—Yet
there was something in his ghastly pale
ness, and in the languishing, manner in
which he had opened his eyes and Clos
ed them again, that struck me to the
heart. “ This lad has chosen a strange
place to sleep in on this rainy day””
said Ito my guide. “ Oh! it is not to
sleep that he has come there,” replied
lie, “it is to die; he is starving.”
Starving! Good God! but he did not
a»k for any thing.” They “ wont ask j
when they are so far gone; they prefer ■
to die.” 1 made Salvator run back to i
him immediately, and followed him as !
quick as I could. I had one orange
left,'the juice of which by degrees so
far revived him as to enable him to re
turn to town a»d take mote substantial
food. The fervor with which he blessed
me for having restored him to life, prov
ed that hope had been lingering with
him to the last extremity.”

favorable notion of the progress ofkncw

of a dictionary in folio of the ancient

former, when complete., will consist of
six volumes folio., It is printed under

by all the archbishops and bishops of

who has already, translated into the ;

the following remarks, in the spirit of which
we entirely concur :
“ We feel for the situation of those gen
tlemen among the dismissed officer* who had
considered themselves embarked for life in
the military profession, and now find them
selves stranded, at the mercy of the world,
with w hose tempestuous waves their educa- !
tion has not taught them to buffet. This :
fluctuating policy in regard to the army, i
fixing it at one Session if Congress, reiki- ■
cing and M-oogUniaiog (amt almost disorgan- •
iziog) it at another, is calculated to render j
the.army less useful, and is seriously preju- j
I dicial in one sense, by leaving the whole bo.
| dy of officer’s uncertain of the term of ser- •
vice, and indisposing them, by a natural curt*
sequence, to the serious pursuit of the stu
dies necessary to make them accomplished
soldiers. We hope, however, that the es
tablishment will be suffered to remain on
its present fooling long enouglj at least to
afford an opportunity of realizing its exist
ence, and deriving some advantages from it
which time has been hitherto denied for.
Many meritorious officers have doubtless
been unavoidably discharged. They can
not fee! mortification at what was the effect
of an act of Congress directing this decima
tion ; and we hope they will find the walks
i es civil life more quiet, if not more grateful,
than those they have late!y ( trodde».”
