AUGUSTA HERALD.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1821.
At the Land Sale 9 at Tuscaloosa,
on the 21st. ultimo, which closed on
Saturday last, of 22 Townships of
fered, but 14" half quarter sections, (say
11,160 acres) were sold for the gross
amount of 516,290 91. The principal
part was sold at government price—
and none for more than three dollars
per acre.
Capt. Bailey, late of the United States
Army put a period to his existence at
Platsbarg, on the 22d ult. He was at
tached to a regiment, which has lately
been disbanded, and the officers of
which cast lots to determine who should,
be retained in service. It fell to the
lot of Capt. B. to take a discharge,
which so depressed his spirits, as to
produce a partial derangement, and led
him to commit suicide m a manner too
shocking to be mentioned.
A plant of the Arbor Aristis has
recently been brought to England fvoin
the coast of Malabar. This curious ex
otic has only leaves on it in the day
time; but about nine o'clock in the
evening it is covered all over with flow
ers of a beautiful white color, and of a
delicate smell.
FIRE!
Savannah, August 23.
On Tuesday night, about 11 o’clock,
the alarm of fire was given in this city,
which was discovered to proceed from a
back building in the rear of Col. Mour
noy’s dwelling house, on Bolfon-square.
/l'lte progress of the flames was rapid,
Hud fortunately, the wind was light,
which prevented the fire from involving
a great portion of that part of our city
in destruction. It Was not, however,
arrested until it had destroyed eleven
buildings ; most of which, were small,
and situaied on the lane.—Among the
buildings destroyed, were, the dwelling
house, kitchen, and stable o' F. Kort
man, on Abercorn-street; a house and
kitchen occupied by Mr. Turell, on the
lane; and the wash-house, kitchen and
stable of Col. Flournoy. The remain
ing houses on the lane, were occupied
by negroes. In addition to the above,
two small houses, one on the corner of
Abercorn and Market-streets, occupied
by Mrs. Eyrick, and another on Mar- i
ket-strect were pulled down to stop the j
progress of the flames. The Out-house, j
m which the fire originated, and the
dwelling house to which it was attach
ed, were unoccupied, and it must, there
, fore, have been the work of an incendia
ry. We understand that Mr. Kort
nian's property is insured. The exer
tions ol the citizens, and different fire
companies, are deserving of every praise.
On the afternoon of the 9th inst. the
tavern and stables of Jacob Fallett,
Troy, New-York, were laid in ashes.
Loss estimated- at S4OOO.
The cargo of the sloop Norfolk, from
Norfolk, is now unloading at Walnut
street wharf, in presence of a large
concourse of persons, who are exam
ining the kegs in which were pigs of
iron, &c. instead of dollars, which had
been insured. Boxes and cases stuffed
with straw, &c. insteaJ of dry goods,
&c. Most attention seems paid to the
cask in which was Oil of Vitriol and
other combustibles which took fire, and
which it is believed was expected to
burn the vessel and cargo.

The fine ship Tuscarora, Capt. W est, ar
rived at this port la t evening, from Liver

this arrival, we have received Bdiinge’s Li

tle of an interesting nature.
Jassy and Bucharest were in the hands of
the Turks ; and Prince Ypsilanti, who still
remained at Teurgovitz with 10,030 men,
was on the eve or being attacked by the un
ited lorces of Hadschi Achmet Pacha, and
Jussuff Paclia of Ibrailow. The Greek in
i' habitants of Bucharest had been disarmed.
Patrass has been almost totally destroyed by
the l urks, arid the inhabitants executed in
great numbers/ The Greeks have, how
ever, obtained a decided superiority over the
Turks at roe's. They have captured a great
number of Turkish vessels, and put the
whole of their crew's to death, amounting to
about 5,000 men : no quarter appears to be
given by either Greeks or Turks. Accounts
from Constantinople ot the 25;h May', state
the return of comparative tranquility ; but
the arrests continued, and Danesi was stilt
in prison. The Grand Seignor had sue- ;
ceeded in repressing tne seditious tumults !
of the Janissaries, by threatening to send
them tire head of Ins son, who is heir to the
throne, and then burying himself under the
ruins of tile Seraglio.
A large Greek ship, having on board a
vast quantity of arms and munitions of war,
and bound to the Morea, to the assistance
of the Greek insurgents there, was fallen in
with by the English fr gate Revolutiouaire,
Capt. Pekw, and ordered to surrender.
An engagement took place. The English
had lour men killed and several wounded.
Hie Greek ship Was captured and carried
into Zante.—ln consequence of this event,
the British government have ordered two
additional sloops of war and several of llie
beat regimen’s to proceed immediately to
the lonian islands, whose inhabitants are .aid
to have a strong itching to make common

Accounts had been received, via Jamaica,
of the death of Bonaparte; who, (say* the
Havana papers) exhibited in his ia.l mo

Our readers may recollect that there ap
peared in this paper, some two months ago,
an account taken from an English paper, of
an infernal engine of war, then building at
Boston. At the last advices the English
were not aware of the hoax, and the appall
irg- description of “ The Devil,” as they
call her, was stii! travelling the rounds of
the provincial papers. The Inverness Jour
nal,| after publishing the article, observe-.
“ Hie dimensions m the American floating
engine of destruction, were surpassed by
the enormous ship the Great Michael, rigged
out, as the old historians tell us, by James
the IV. King of Scotland. The Great Mich
ael was of such immense stature, an.l took
so much timber, that she wasted all the
woods in File, except Falkland, and all the
timber that could be got from Norway. All
the wrlghtsof Scotland, and many strangers
likewise, were at the device, and though
they worked busily, she took a year and a
' day to complete.—She was 12 score feel in
J length, and 36 feet within the sides ; she
i was 10 feet tiiick on the wail, and boards on
• ■every side so slack and so thick, that no
I cannon could pierce her. This mighty ship
cumbered all Scotland to get her to sea.
The expenses of her outfit were counted
to the King lo be 30,0001. She bore many
cannons, 6 rows on every side, with 3 great
bassils, 2 behind on her deck, and one be
fore ; 300 shot of artiilery, that is to say,
myand and battered falcon, and quarter fal
