“ I came <o the pl.ice of my birth, and said,
• The li lends of my youth, where art tie y’t

Le>ii)f rears had elapsed since 1 gazetl on ih
scene.
W tech w fancy still robed in its freshness of
green ;
Tin ~>u. where, a school boy, all thoughtless
I stray’d
Bv the side of the stream, in the gloom of the
sh 'de.
I thought of the friends who had roam’d with
me there,
W hen the sky was so blue, and the flowers
were so fur;
All scatter’d, -II sunder’d, by mountain and
wave.
And some irt the cold silent womb of the
grave!
I thought of the green banks that circled
around,
W ith the wild-flowers, with sweet-briar, anti
eglantine crown’d.
1 thought ot the river, all stirless and bright
As the face of the sky on a blue sujtuik might.
Ami I thought of the trees under w hich 1 lud
strayed,
Os th. braid leafy boughs, with the coolness
t f shade.
And 1 hoped, though disfigured, sortie token
to find
Os tire names, and the carvings, impress’d on
the rind.
All eager I hasten’d the scene to behold,
Ket det’tJ Sacred & dear by the feelings of old,
And 1 deem'd that, uuaiter’d, my eye should
explore
This refuge, this haunt, this Elysium of yore!
‘ I was a dream—not a token or trace could I
new
Os the names that I lov’d, of the tree that 1
knew.
Like the shadows of night, at the dawning of
day,
Like a t ile that is told, they have vanish’d
away.
And tnetln tight the lone river that murmur’d
along,
W as rm re dull in its motion, more sad in its
song ;
Since the birds, that had nestled and warbled
above,
Had all Hed from its banks, at the fall of the
gr vc !
I paused, ft the moral came home to nty lit’nrt;
Behold how of earth ail the glories depart!
Our vi ton- are baseless, our In pes but a
gleam,
Our stall but a reed, and our life but a dr am!
1 hen, oh! let us look, let our prospectsaiiure,
'lo scene that can fade nut, to realms that
endurei
To glories, to blessings, that triumph sublime
O’e r tile blighting* of change, anti the ruin* j

« Dear Sir.—Your anxiety res- J

£u>i vi 4mu or Scull-cap in cases of
hydrophobia, has induced me to satisfy j
you in relation to « >aelf. I was bit by j
n mad dog iit Alexandria, and have .
been cured by the use of scull-cap, as- j
ter having bet n in one stage of hydro
phobia. A couGrinntiou of the of
any weed, particuliy ly such an one as
grow* so plentifully as the scull-cap
among our hills and dales, must, I
think, be hailed wiih some degree of
respect by the human family ; but how !
much more grateful must 1 feel to him
with whom this all important discove- i
ry originated; l leave you-to judge af
ter reading my case.-—1 will simply i
stale it to ynu:
“ About tiro middle of May last, l
left this place for Baltimore, via Alex
andria, I>. C. On my arrival in the lat
ter place, l visited a wharf at which lay
the licorgetown packet; (this was on
Friday the 23 th of May.) In passing
along the wharf, a large dog ran to
wtnlsaml bit me severely in the leg.
1 felt somewhat alarmed, but being told,
what was generally believed, that the
d >a* was not mad, I was reconciled.
However, by the advice of some friends,
1 prucum., be I ore 1 left the town, lome
of the si till cap. On the 7th day after
1 was bit, feeling, I thought, somewhat
differently than usual, I commenced
drinking the scull cap tea, agreeably
to the directions which I had received.
On the morning of the 9th day after 1 !
was bit, l arrived at Mr. Alien Dor- ;
sey's Poplar Spring, Md. on my wav |
home from Baltimore; on sitting down
to breakfast, Mrs. Dorsey handed me a
cup of tea, which l repeatedly tried to \
drink, but could not, and had to sjut !
out the victuals 1 but just put in my j
mouth. I felt something like spasms
over mv whole system. Indeed, my
dear sir, my let fin s were shocking,
dt etuiful, mdesi .ibable ;my eves be
came 'Jim, head Ui/./.y, ivc. 1 arose
from the table, went to the window, the
door— Mrs. I). can better describe my
situation than 1 can. After some time,
I became more as ease, and had some
of the scull-cap prepared, which 1 drank
with difficulty. Not in the habit ot
dunking any thing stronger than water,
1 asked for some guod wine, which 1
obtained, and forced ntysell to drink id
it copiously. Alter some stay, I press
ed towards home, but the iiex nvurn
imv fasting a- usur. , drank the scull
cap tea. and tea much better ; and have
continued to drink it from that time to
the present, and do verily believe it
has restored me to my family sane ami
in perfect health.
Your obedient servant,
MATHIS W 1. CLARK.”

CORN,
Jlnd its Fodder, how best to save it.
>'ir.—Much has been said in your
v luoble paper about the cutting of
corn in the lull, I have, for fifteen
year* past, cut nrne off, and shall
continue d) do so. When your corn
wiil bear the pulling of blades and
ti.king the tops, you may then cut
and put it on its bills, and us much
together us will let it stand firmly in
eoeks, keeping the lower part a little
open to admit air. My system is lo
have no more cutters than l have
hands to foilow and cock us fast us
it is cut down. If your corn i* late,
nnd you (ear it will be injured, by
frost, by pin ing it in cocks it is se
cured against it.—J here is less dan
ger in Corn shri filing, managed in
this way, than pulling your blades i
and taking the lops hi the Usual
mode. Vly corn is husked in the
Geld and the cocks doubled, and so
they stand Until fed uwny during the
winter aad spring—Die quantity of
feed for your stock is mine than
doubled, and ihe m mure more than
trebled—the whole is carried out iu
April and May, on my tob 'ceo lands,
and ploughed iu and the crop much
improved by it. My mode of feed
ing is to dr w in us much into the
liorseyard as will l-.si the horses for
the night—in the morning the rattle
go in and are feeding th ough the
day,' much of the stalk is eaten—
this is continued as long as the fod
der lusts, and then we feed our hay
on the lop. Straw ought not to he
given lo your stock in the same yard
—it will pi event the stalks from be
ing cut line by your stock.
My corn loft is fourteen feet in
width—will hold about »3o barrels,
and for some years I hod much c i

they will core quite green and sweet.
