The bill to provide for the permanent
endowment of the University, and to
appropriate monies for the erection ol a
new (Joilegiate Edifice at Athens, pas
sed the House of Representatives on
Tuesday last—on the following day a
motion to reconsider the minutes as
respected the passage of this bill was
rejected—Yeas 48—Nays 49. The bill
to repeal the act reslncting the introduc
tion of slaves into this state has passed
the House. A resolution contemplat
ing the sale of the fractional surveys in
Dooly, Houston, Monroe, Henry and
Fayette,was rejected on Wednesday
last—yeas 3.3— nays 55 — Yesterday the
House of Representatives had under I
consideration a bill to incorporate a j
< ompany for establishing a Turnpike j
Road from Athens to Augusta.

For the last week savannah river has
afforded an animating spectacle, and
has been liteiyilly whitened with the
sails of numerous vessels freighted with
the productions of every quarter of the
globe. he business, bustle and activi

DISTRESSING EVENT.
On * unday evening, 25th ult. Mr.
Nevvdy (». Connell, of this county, was |
burnt to death about a mile from War- 1
ten ton. fie wassm his way to Augusta

sitting over a fire which, he had prepar
ed for the night, and is supposed to
have fallen into it in a fit. When found,
the flesh on one arm and one side of his
body was burnt almost to a cinder. lie
continued in the most -excruciating
agony until Monday afternoon, when
