A Pleasant Surprise.
Recently one of our handsome sol
dier boys, by the aid of political Influ
ence, was assured of his discharge sev
eral days ahead of his regiment, ow
ing to the fact that he was a party to
a marriage contract. When our young
rhevnller prevented himself before As
sistant Secretary of War General Cor
bin he was asked by that official If the
story was genuine. The young son of
Mars with blushes acknowledged the
corn anrl gave the young lady's name
and address. General Corbin turned to
his typewriter and told him to write a
letter, to the young lady, congratulat
ing her on the happy event. The young
soldier hastened away to receive the
greetings of his prospective bride, ar
riving ahead of the letter from the
war department and telling he was
borne on a short furlough, which sad
ly grieved her, as she had been looking
fcr’ the discharge of her handsome
lover from further military duty. But
his presene? for awhile caused her to
forget "the dread alarums of war” in
basking in love's young dream. In
