A New Georgia Bra.
The stare of Georgia threaten* to
tend a republican to the house of rep
resentative* at Washington, and the
shade* of Ben Hill and Hubert Toombs
are doubtless appropriately agitated.
But the Georgia of today is not the
Georgia of Hill and oombs. nor can
ihe political conditions of a former
day be expected to prevail forever. In
face of radical transformation in eco
nomic condition*. The Atlanta expo
sition displayed to the country with
startling realism the steady evolution
of the. New South in its progressive
commonwealth.
And a natural sequence of that expo
sition. ’»drh its Industrial wealth,
would be the novelty of a republican
congressman, elected on the issue of
protection for the long staple cotton
growers of the Eleventh district
against the rivalry of Egyptian cotton,
and an Increase of tariff on the other
raw materials produced In the south
ern counties of the state. Georgia has
eleven congressmen all democrats and
outspoken free silver men, save one
who figures as a bimetallist. On the
Issue of Bryanism, which the demo
crats of the north are now seeking
with such desperation to revive, the
election of a republican congressman
in Georgia would be a manifest impos
sibility at this time. But the cry of
protccton has taken fair hold of the
men there who produce cotton, wool,
lumber, rice and other raw materials;
and on this Issue the populists of the
Eleventh district are reported to ha-c
abandoned their old combination
with the democrats and to have joined
hands with the republicans who
thus come into the possession of a
considerable number of while voters
and an admirable chance of victory in
a campaign intelligently conducted.
Thus the new industrial advancement
of the south gives promise of ultimate
to shelving the color line in federal
elections and offsetting in some meas
ure Ihe pernicious activity of Chicago
platform • isms" in certain sections of

WOMEN IN KANSAS POLITICS.
Year By Year They Are lidglng In
Deeper.
Topeka, Kansas. Sept. 22. Year by
year Ihe women of Kansas are edging
their way deeper into politics, There
is one county office which is well
adapted for the women County Su
perintendent of Schools and the dis
position seems to Ite growing among
(he people to let the women have that.
There are more women candidates for
county superintendent on the repub
lican ticket throughout the stale this
year than ever known before. At the:
rate the disease is spreading It will
not tie many years before the women
will claim that office as theirs exclu
sively. TWO year* ago there were
fewer tbun a dozen women uomlrialed
for county superintendent over the
state, ad not that many -were elected.
The republican state committee has re
ceived returns from sixty county con
ventions and they show that the wo
men have captured fifteen county su
perintendent omiatios. There are
forty-five cotitiee yet to hear from,
and li is estimated that the women
will get ten out of them, at least. This
will bring the total up to twenty-five,
or about one-fourth, r. growth of one
hundred per cent in the last two
years.
