Whittier’s Unfinished Song of Praise*
T have found these linos on the back
of a note received by Mr. Whittier In
March. 1890. and they were probably
composed at about that time. The
i poem was never finished or printed,
j and the manuscript is In the almost
Illegible style of hls first rought drafts,
and I have been compelled to guess at
'one or two of the words.
SAMUEL T. PICKARD,
j Boston, Mass.
iFor the land that gave me birth;
!For my native home and hearth;
I For the change and overturning;
'Of the times of my sojourning:
*For the world-step forward taken;
For an evil way forsaken:
jFor cruel taw abolished:
For Idol shrines demolished;
For the tools of peaceful labor
Wrought from broken guns end saber;
For the slave-chain rent asunder;
And by free feet trodden under;
For the truth defeating error:
For the love that casts out terror;
For the truer, clearer vision
Of humanity's great mission;
—For all that man upraises,
T sing this song of praises.

Such Love.
Give me a love which, like a mighty
wave
Rushing to meet the palpitating
shore,
Will greet my heart! Such love as Ve
nus gave
To young Adonis or as Eos bore
For darkened earth, when, with her
Illy hand.
She ope d the heaven's gate and will
ing light
Loosed from Its prison, quirk o'er
sprtad the land
And flooded nature with an ocean
bright—
A love which, welcome as the kindly
dew.
Sprinkled at even, to the parched
earth.
Will bathe my burning heart with
gladnesa, too.
And deck my pallid cheek with rosy
mirth —
A love so strong, y-t ever gently sweet
That ne'er will die with cold or fade
with heat.
