A curious Incident occurred last week
at Leesburg, In connection with the re
covery of Robert Fr«sler.the darky who
was shot about two month* ago by
George Hope, another darky. This pis-1
to! ball passed Into the side of Frailer
nnd wss never extracted. Monday he;
felt bad. and took a drink of whiskey, j
That made him feel worse and on the j
advice of friends he took * small drink 1
of kerosene. He had scarcely swallowed
it when he felt something break loose
and fall In his right side, which caused
him to cough violently, when up came
the pistol ball, and the doctors ere
speculating on the occurrence.
The engagement Im* been announced
of Miss Jessie Prior of Atlanta and Ar
thur J. Allen, postmaster In the Chi
nese Imperial service at Soochow, Chi
na. Mr. Prior will leave for China with
Hr. Young J. Allen, today The wed
ding will occur at Nagasaki. Japan, but
the couple will reside at Soochow . Mr,
Arthur Alton Is a graduate of Oxford
College, and Is the son of Hr. Young J.
Allen, the missionary of to China. Dr.
Allen hns sever*! children, all of whom 1
were torn tn China, but each was given
an education In thi* country. Hr. Al
len says In two years from now his
son will reeelve a twelve months' vaca
tion. and he will then come to the Uni
ted States and visit Atlanta with the
wife he is about to marry.
There Is In the Atlanta Tower a pris
oner who has been In Jail for near four
years, and who will probably remain
there until he dies unless something ex
trnordlnaiy occurs to get him out. And
this life's Imprisonment Is due. he says,
to a few hasty words Spoken in anger,
and for the purpose us revenging him
self on those whom he believed to he
his persecutors. It was on the third
day of April, 1895, that Barry Wright, j
a middle-aged negro, stood before,
Judge l-umpkln In the superior court |
and exclaimed: “Yes, I have the money '
and those niggers shall never get it.” I
Wright was at the head of the Ameri
can emigration movement, an organiza
tion which had for its object the expor
tation of negroes to Liberia, and re
fused to turn over the funds on hand
whw ordered to do so by the ©ourt.
