EXCITING GAME
By Score of Three to Two.
Chicks Got Close Many
Times, and Rick Kahrs
Was Pulled From Sev
eral Bad Holes by
Brilliant Fielding
The peerless support given Rick
Kahrs by Busch’s bunch of Tourists
was the feature of th e big Augusta
benefit game Tuesday, which was
copped by the Tourists with a score
of three to two.
The crippled Chicks lost after
many good chances to pull ahead. The
first three innings marked the end
of the scoring, but not of exciting
plays.
With a crowd of over a thousand
fans out to see the play, the Chicks
opened auspiciously after two were
down in the first inning. Wagnon
was presented with a pass to first.
Valdois, the ex-Tourist, then cracked
to the central garden for three sacks.
The next batter failed to connect
with three of Kahrs' twisters.
The Tourists came back with a
vengeance. McLauren opened with a
hit through short. Bierman fanned,
but McMahon sent a sizzler through
Valdois and McLauren counted. The
second crimp was put in the Chicks
when Coles hit to right, sending Mac
to third. Harnish followed with a
little blngle and another run was
scored.
The second Inning saw the score
tied. Evans started off with a double
to left. Cot fi sacrificed. Then Gibbes
singled to right, scoring Evans.
The next round saw the last run of
the game. Bierman passed to first
was advanced to second on Coles’ hit.
Harnish hit to Valdois, who let the
pellet ramble on out to left field, and
Dutch untied the score.
In several innings Kahrs was badly
in the hole Once three men got on
the sacks through successive errors,
yet by a lightning double due to
Hlenie's ability they were retired one
time. Again with three on base and
one out a long fly went to Coles In
right field. He shot the ball to Har
nish In such rapid style that the run
ner started back to third. Harnish
made a quick throw and he was
tagged.
Rick was bumped frequently, but
steadied in .he pinenes. while his
support was enough to win for any
t Wirier.

Exciting Inning of Exciting
Game Was too Much for Lady
The following incident of the game,
relates better than all the adjectives
in the dictionary the closeness of tho
game Tuesday and the number of
ticklish holes which Kahrs managed
to pull out of with great support and
good head work.
In the eighth inning Valdois made
first on McMahon's wild throw. Kier
nan hit to Kahrs, who threw to Bier
man. Dutch dropped the hall and
both men were sufe. When Kahrs
sent a swift one over, which caught
Evans in the slats putting the out
outfielder hors de combat for a few
minutes.
The Tourists were only one run in
the lead. It was the eighth inning,
the bases jagged and nobody out.
Truly an exciting moment. Those
seated near the top the grand
stand noted a lady looking intently
at the players. The absorbing in

countenance, would have done credit
to one of the Gibson drawings of
the ’’third strike.”
<Vhen Cole fouled out to Harnish
the tense expression was slightly re

faced the twirler the strange pallor
of her countenance increased.
Gibbes dropped a perfect bunt to
Kahrs, it seemed certain that Val-
DOG DAYS TROUBLE
BASE BALL FANS
ATLANTA, Ga—Yesterday was the
beginning of dog days and it rained.
Just think of it. if the old adage ho
true, there will be wet times coming.
If it rains on the first day of dog
dags, it will continue to rain for forty
days and forty nights, and that’s At
lanta's prospects. Haseball fans are
almost in tears, for they have been
looking forward to many afternoons
in good weather when they can shout
for the home team, despite the fact
that Billie Smith's braves are not
very high up the ladder.
The showers, light though they
were, began to fall shortly heforc
eight o'clock yesterday morning,
catching most of the business men as
they were leaving home to board the
cars for the work of the day. The
showers did not last long at that
time, but they were resumed later In
the day and about twenty minutes to
two, less than an hour before the
game of the double header was sched
uled to begin things looked finite
gloomy. It cleared up, however, and
both games were played.

tle gasping cry, and the lady dropped
her head against the back oi the seat,
with death like pallor upon her face.
Then Salve stepped to the plata
with a look of "Do or die on his face.”
A ball was called, then a strike, then
a ball. No one noticed the lady,
then another strike, then another ball
‘ two and three,” some one gasped.
Then the pellet sped over the plate.
Salve met it with a resounding crack.
It. went towards short. “Squeeze it,
Dutch,” the grandstand gasped in
unison. The pellet fell straight to
the Dutchman’s outstretched paws.
He held it. A gasp of relief and a
dozen people sprang from the seats
in an eager hope of being of aid to
the lady.
in a few seconds a number nf vig
orously plied fans (Note. Take fans
literally) restored the lady to semi
consciousness. “Did they score?" Did
they score?” she dreamily murmured.
When told that the Tourists had
turned the trick and were still in the
lead, she began to sit up and nt
tice. By this time some one rushed
up with a glass of water. With the
aid of the water and the aforesaid
fans, she was quickly restored.
Fortunately in the ninth, the Chicks
went out in one, two, three order.
TOURISTS ARE OFF FOR
SIX ROAO GAMES
Thursday the Tourists travel to I
Charleston for a series with the!
Gulls, then to Columbia for another
aeries with the Chicks, then home
again.
At tho rate the Tourists are travel
ing now, they should come home two
more series to their credit. The most
important factor in the pretent win
ning slrcak is the increased swatting
proclivities of the bunch. Coles, Me- \
Lauren, and McMahon are now hit- !
ling a great clip, while .lack Mullin'
is getting his stride again. Busch, |
himself lb hilling better than lie has j
any other time during the season.
Tho game should be easy this as- j
ternoon. Volz, it is true, will be the
opposing slabman, and he has a habit
of working havoc with Augusta's bat
ting average, but then Reagan will
do th honors for Heinle’s men, and
tho Tourists are almost sure not to
have a B ad of more than one to over
come.
