MARKET SAGGED,
BUT GAINER
LITER
NKW YORK.—The rot tan market
opened 5 to ti points lower on the
rabies, which were affected by the
offerings ot actual cotton and tint ex
tension of short time In the Lanca
shire mill*. After the call price*
held about steady.
Tbe weather map showed generally
clear conditions in Texas, following
three days of shower*, and there were
showers throughout the eastern belt.
At the close the market was practi
cal! y unchanged.
ANIMATED SCENES
IN THE STOCK
MARKET •
NEW YORK Wild manipulation
was seen at the opening of the stock
market today, and excited covering
was started with Rock Island, New
York Central, and the Erie stocks as
the leaders. Amalgamated was moved
up in tho first few minutes from 76
3-4 to 79. lu ten minutes it dropped
back to 76 3-4, but later resumed its
advance. In Smelters there was an
advance of more titan 2 points. New
York Central jumped from 101 5-8 to
103 3-4. The Hock Island stocks ad
vanced 1 point each.
This peculiar manipulation frtght
ened the room traders and tho mar
ket then became very dull. It is the
general opinion that a pool of Rock
Island officials is heavily short of the
market and that the rumors of a re
ceivership for tlie property originated
in the headquarters of the company.
All members of (he Rock island group
vigorously deny that they are short
of stocks.
On the curb market business was
light. There was nothing of import
ance in any isßue.
The London market was quiet.
