CASPAR WHITNEY ON THE OLYM
PIC GAME 3. '
Long after its unuappy dissensions
have been forgotten the brilliant
achievement of the American ath
letes at the fifth revival of the Olym
pic games will be remembered. Let
ns embrace that solace now while
highly colored and partisan "Inter
views' are being battledored and shut
tlococked aero*# the Atlantic. Let
u* on the American side also rest
content In the belief that however
suggestive of unfairness some of
acts may have appeared, the English
ottlcials did the best of which they
were capable; anad did their best hon
estly.
Let me, also, assure the sportsman
of the other side that the hearts of
our athletes are of prime quality even
though their manners may not be an
invariable correct Index. Indeed 1
may pursue the thought further and
out of my own experience and obser
vation affirm for the Information of
both sides of the Atlantic—that, class
for class, and apart from the univer
sities, American athletes ha-se the
heart and British athletes the man
ner.
And while the reflective mood is
on me I wish likewise to say that
had it not been for the Amateur Ath
letic union, had It not been for the
indefatigable efforts, the technical
knowledge, and the experience of .las
E. Sullivan, there would have been
no such winning team from America
