Well Known Merchant

fox* Fine Fall Business.
Mr. William Schwelgert who will
go to New York to purchase
stated berore leaving that he was go
stock 9tated that he was going to
buy a better and larger quantity
o£ goods for his jewelry store
than ever before. He made this state
ment not as an advertisement but as
an evidence of his belief in' the size
of the fall and winter trade
Than Mr. Schweigert, there is w
more far-sighted and cautious mer
chant in Augusta. He has built up a
great business by his ability to See
ahead and therefore his dictum in this
instance has the weight of an au
thority.
And this opinion is growing In all
quarters ot the city. The merchants
see no reason way there should be
any poor trade this fall or season.
Augusta is, with the exception of
the poor people, well over the para
lysis caused by the flood and is in
communication with iho:<e sources
that produce trade. The adjacent
territory is in good condition and Au
gusta will have more than a small
chare in the prosperity that is sure
to come.

CITIZENS BIND TOGETHER
TO PREVENT FLOOD WATERS
m
compllsh. He of course suggested
the advl<> and counsel of Commis
sioner* Nisbet Wingfield, as well as
that of Col. Pan Kingman, or one of
his subordinates. He advised thst the
committee read and get together all
the expert data they ran secure, so
that in the adoption of a definite plan
they may aafei.v feel they have work
ed for the very best interests of the
city. He said in his opinion It would
also be incumbent upon this commit
tee to inquire into the cost of what
ever means of protection they should
recommend, and into the most proper

1 front city, county and state govern-
J ment. He said he thought the Im
i provement would cost at least, $5.-
000,000.
Mr. Salinas suggested that the com
mittee inquire whether or not the city
of New Orleans secured aid from the
government In erecting their levees.
MR. POPE FAVORED
DRAWBRIDGE.
Mr. Pope said that If draws were
put in th t , bridges th e river would
then become navigable much higher
than boats now run, and that in this
way the government would become
interested. He stated that he under
stood the railroads were to drive pil
ing6 along the river hank from Me
Kinne street to the Hawk's Gully, and
would erect a most substantial river
bank for the accommodation of their
terminal trackage. He cited the pe
culiar conditions that now exist at
th P mouth of Hawk's Gully, showing
th e commission how the water from
i that stream Is thrown out into the
river, only to be forced bark In time
of flood by the barrier of trees that
lines the Carolina side of the river
at that point. He recommended the
removal of a dam that now crosses
the bottom Jand ..to protect the Au
gusta Aiken trolley tracks, that. are
laid ou an embankment. He advised,
also, the removal of a dam further
down, erected by the Southern rail
road .to protect their Hamburg ap
proaches to the bridge.
Mr. Verdery stated that in his re
port on local conditions, ('apt. Carter,
a civil engineer, referred to by Capt.
Young, favoied reservoir* above the
city. He said thal powerful New York
capitalists were now Interested In the
work of Improving and developing
latent water power along the Savan
nah river, and staled that the dam
at Anthony Shoals would provide the
largest reservoir of water in Amer
ica. He also favored the removal of
the eleetrle railway company's dam
Mr. Tobin pledged his best efforts
to co-operate in every way with the
movement, and stated tiia' he was
deeply Impressed with the commend
abie spirit displayed by overy organ
izatlon Invited to send representa
ttves to the meeting.
URGED HELP OF
COL. KINGMAN.
Mr. Eve said that Col. Kingman
was a valuable man in a time of this
kind. “He has Inveatlßated conditions
very thoroughly," Mr Eve said, "and
I know that he feels a kindly Inter
est. for Augusta. I would suggest
that the oxecutive committee, til their
deliberations, Invite the counsel and
advice of Col. Dan C Kingman. He
can do much for us. If it he possible
for the city to secure an approprla
tion from the government, tie is in n
position to do ns more good than any
other one man In my knowledge"
Mr. Eve urged that the committee se
cure the aid of city, county, state
and, If possible, national authorities.
He said he didn't think It was im
possible for Augusta to get help front
the government, and strongly urged
that the committee appeal to congres*
to Rend an engineer here, with a view
