RhIVAUV,
Jd offered by the Board of Directors for
the apprehension and prosecution to con
viction, of any of the principals, aiders, or
abetters, in making and passing Counter
feil Notes of this Bank,
Augustus Moore, cash'r.
June T>——wSw
liuuk of Augusta,
12lh June, 1829.
CAUTION.
As several counterfeit imitations of Hun
dred Dollar Bills of the Bank cf Augusta,
have been lately passed, and others offer
ed, in this place, the earliest information
thereof is communicated through the press
to warn the public against further imposi
tion.
As far as the counterfeits have been ex
amined, they are dated 1U Decern. 1817,
Leitc r C', The paper is pretty goad, and
the engraving in general a well executed
imitation of the original, but somewhat
dai ker and stronger in appearance, especi
ally bi the hair liu >s throughout, and in
toe names of the engravers at the bottom
of the note.
The counterfeits, though not all of the
same length, are generally a sixteenth ot
an inch shorter than the genuine: the
Horizontal line on the fop of the letter K
in the word HANK, which in the genuine
note almost connects the upright With the
sloping part, is deficient in the counter
feit; and the right of the vignette, at the
fight of the counterfeit Bill, encircling
the figures 100 has hut one of the tendrils,
or hair flourishes—lhe lower or horizon
tal one in the form of a Z/0 being omitted.
In the counterfeits, the figures on the
right and left, denoting the numbers of
the bill, are written by the same hand,
A’liereas, in all the genuine, tltey arc in
variably and perceptibly written by two
persons.
The Letters in the forged signature of
die President are moi'e roundly formed
at the turns, and those of the. Cashier’s
much flatter than in the genuine, and a
Carefulness and formality in beta, observ
able in the Counterfeits.
Ail the bad Bill? seen or h^afd.of, are
idled up vi’h the name of Jas. Clay,
and have these distinctions—The let
ter J in the genuine is formed without
the fine curved line crossing.the cen
tre of tlie stem, which appears ih the bad
Rills, the letter C is much (UrAitr, and
•he penmanship in the whole name al
together inferior to the genuine.
it has been asserted, that the impressions
of the spurious Bills are from tlie original
Plate, but the several variations particu
larised above, arc a sufficient rep'y to
those assertions
