PROPOSALS
For Publishing a Newspaper
TO BE ENTITLES THE
Montgomery Republican
A WARE, that my new and difflcdlt em
it ployment, will subject me to many in
conveniences, arising from want of experi
ence, it is with diffidence! announce my
self as being about to undertake, (in addi
tion to other engagements) the arduous
task of superintending the Editorial de
partment of a paper. I, hoikever trust
that my JVeius arrangements will be such,
as will enable me to present the citizens of
Alabama with a Journal, not entirely unin
teresting to them, while my exertions in
producing facts in relation to that State
and other subjects, aided by some literary
friends, w ill render it net altogether Ini
acceptable toothers.
1 must, on tins occasion, be permitted to
depart from the general custom of giving
laborious details of the advantages result
ing, from Newspaper publications, artd of
making specious promises; the one being
already sufficiently understood, and the
other calculated to deceive. I Offer neith
er; merely remarking that its name pro
claims its principles, and that my libmbie
efforts will be freely exercised m endeav*
curing to promote the usefulness of the
paper and interests of the people.
it may not be amiss togive to those un
acquainted, a short sketch of the place
whence the paper is to be issued.

sea ports of Mobile and Blakeiy; about 55

and about 12 miles below the junction ot

at which the Atlantic mails reach tlieir
first stopping piuce in the state, and from
whence eVews niuj-be distributed through
the country with great facilities. Mont
gomery, from its high and airy situation,
the purity of its waters, flowing from its
several springs, and the elevation of the
banks along the river on both sides, which
exemde stagnant waters, is considered pe

that section during the summer months,
on that account: It contains many roman

for an infant establishment, it may be call
