1 COURT OF INQUIRY.
5 The defence of Capt. Hull, was
Had by his counsel before the Court
B inquiry, assembled at the Navy
■ard in Charlestown, on Thursday
■terqponf —-It was a document ot
Heat interest, and was considered by
Kose who have attended the whole
Hvestigation, to have presented a
Ethful outline of the vast mass of
Hstimony, occupying upwards of
■OO folio pages, spread upon the re
lord of the court. If this opinion be
lorrect, there can be no difference of
■atemeivt hereafter, as to the perfect
Htegrity of Capt. Hull, and the un
iubstantial and groundless charges
Eat have been preferred against his
Ifficial conduct.—Without attempt-
Kg to give an abstract of even the
Joints of the defence, which was ve-
Klt much condensed, we may be per-
Kitted to state one fact contained in
K. A candid consideration of this
Hct will at once extinguish in a mind
H t| ie least reflection the charge of
peculation and plunder, so confl-
Kntly advanced against this distin-
Siished officer. He stated upon his
I nor and veracity as a gentleman,
it his whole real and personal pro
rty including his prize money for
pturing the Guerriere, his pay and
loluments for 25 years of service,
d all his other resources, amounts
less than eighteen thousand dol
s. A schedule of his estate we
derstand is to be annexed to the
jceedings. The only regret we
ertain at this circumstance is, that
so gallant an officer should have felt
it necessary to resort for his vindica
tion to an argument of this descrip
tion, but having urged it, the charge
of speculation is completely divested
[of even the shadow of a foundation.
Tiie whole defence was very mas
terly, especially that part of it coin
prizing an examination of Lieut. Ab
bot’s letters to the Secretary of the
Navy, with a view to a refutation of
the allegations they contain by means
of tiie testimony before the court.

C'iMMUNIOA'I’KO.
Died, in this city, on Thursday, the I
17th inst. Mr. Oliver Miller, a na
tive of Hagerstown, Maryland, in his
21th year. His nature was but little al-;
loved by vanity; for he strove not for
the ad mi ratio'n of men : neither was (ns
soul cankered by the rust of avarice; for
he spent not the strength of his limbs,
and the affections of his heart, in the pur
sui* of vile trash: yet the tears of those
whom nature bound to him in kindred
bonds, “aiheit unus°d to the melting
mood,” attest how eminently gifted lie
was with the mild and gentle virtues;
how richly endued with those amiable j
altra. lions, that are calculated lo draw
around men the sympathies and affections
of their tellow-men.
