The following account is giyerf
by the gardener of the Rev. Dr.-
Drake of Amcrlham, rcfpedtiug the €
extraordinary produce of a Angle
grain of wheat in the garden of that
gentleman. "On the jst day of
August, 1 Cowed, or rather let, a
Angle grain of red wheat; and in •
the latter end of September, when
the plant had tillered, I took it up,
and flipped or divided it into four
sets I planted, and they grew and
tillered as Well as the firft. In the*
end of November, I took them up
a second rime, and made thirty-fix
plants or sets. Thcfc I again plan
ted, which grew till March, in which
month !, a third time took up rny
plant and divided them into 256
plants or sets. For the remaining
part of the lun»me*r, till the month
of August, they had nothing done
to them, except hoeing the ground
clean from the weeds till the corn
was ripe. When it was gathered, I
had the cars counted or numbered,
and they were 3,51 r ; a great pare
of which proved as good grain as
ever grew out of the earth. Many
of the cars measured fix inches in
length, some very middling grains,
some very light and thin. This is
the rcafon 1 did not number the
grains ; tut there was better than
halfabufhel of corn inthe whole
produce of the one grain of wheat in
one year.’' 1
