On Monday night last the Stores of
Messers. Ingliss’s k C». S. 8t M. Ailek
i and Docl. J, Caktcp, were broken o
pen and entered, and in some instances
the books and papers were - overhauled—
desks were opened and examined, and in
the Doctor’s shop cases of instruments
were inspected and emptied , but nothing
was taken, as far as we have understood,
from either place.—Several persons were
probably united in the enterprizc, and
from the evidences of search made, they
were cash dealers only, .as no species ot
property seem to have had attractions
from them, ana no money happened to
come within their observation. An axe,
with which the door iiad been broken o
pen, was left in oae store, and an old
watch in an other. As the improvements
in house.braking do not probably embrace
(he business of making depoiitcs, it is
likely thosfc articles were left by mistake.
Perhaps they may be called for—at any
rate it may be well for the citizens to be
on the look-out for such untimely visiters,
that on their repeating their call they
may find something impressive as a reward
for their industry.
In addition to the above, Mr. Ellsworth’s
shop was also entered by the back window,
the sashes of which were taken out and
some of the glass broken, —and in the shop
an old pair of shoes were left. In one of
the shoes there are a number of shot holes,
which were probably the marks of atten
tion bestowed by one individual upon
the wearer at a time when he was making
similar commentaries upon the vigilance
of such police regulations ss were favora
ble to his occupation— Advertiser.

“Extract of a letter from Panama received
in this city by 11. M. ship Nautilus, from
Porto Bello.
“On the night of the 12th November,
the bouts of the independent squadron, un
der the command of Lord Cochrane: suc
ceeded in cutting out of the port Calaio, a
Spanish 36 gun Ligate. The Hyperion,
British, and Macedonian, American, fri
gates, were at anchor at that port at the
lime, and on the boats (21 in number) ap
proached the Spanish ship, some of them,
on being hailed, said they belonge d to the
Macedonian. Lord C. is stated to have
been severely w-cundedin the engagement.
On the following day, a boat f.om the A
merican frigate went on shore, when the,
greater part of the crew were murdered,
and captain Downs, who was at Lima, was
under the necessity of applying to the
vicc-roy to get an escort of SJO men, to
conduct him on board his ship, the inhabi
tants being bo incensed at the supposed
assistance granted to the boats by the A

Shipwreck —Die brig Paragon, capt
Harding, of and for Wiscasset, from Ha
vanra, went ashore on Noman-woe, near
Cape Ann, on Friday night last, during the
storm, and was totally lost. After the ves
sel struck, the sea broke over her with
such violence os to render it necessary for
the crew to attempt their e.scape as apee
dily as possible, winch was happily effect
ed by means of aline carried to the shore
by a man of the name of Young, who hero
ically plunged into the waves, and with
great exertion reached the land, and by ju
diciously managing his line, all the crew
were saved. They were, however, com
pelled, on account of the darkness, to wan
der during the whole of that dreary night,
and buffet the “pelting storm” until day
light, when they arrived at the house of
Vlr. Johns'.an Knowlton, who received
them with kindness and hospitality.

after the store had been closed, deliberate
ly struck a light, broke open every desk in
the store,(l7 in number) examined the pa

belonging principally to the different
Clerks in the establishment; after which,
they let themselves out alone ofthe south
doors, and made their escape unobserved.
Not an article of merchandize, of any

chosen was well calculated to cover their

Tlifc Florida UaxetTe.
It is the glorious characteristic of the
ape in which we live, that the Press, not
the herald, is always the attendant upon
every revolution, having for its object the
emancipation of mind or the happiness of
man. The Provinces of Florida having
now become u part of the territory ot the
United States, it is believed that ;he tide
ot emigration will set rapidly towards
her shores increasing her wealth, and
tilling her ports with onr enterprising ami
industrious fellow citizens of the old
States, and offering a home and a refuge
o tlie exile and fugitive from the oppres
sion of Europeari thraldom. Favored by
nature with a fruitful soil—abounding in
articles of luxury and commerce, and
blessed with a climate more congenial to
th constitution of the stranger and sojour
ner than the Southern states, this section
of our Country must become great and
powerful, and in time rival its neighbors
in Agriculture, in Commerce and iu Arts.
Wills these impressions, and under the
belief that a well conducted Press is ono
ol the most powerful auxiliaries, not only
to morality and religion, but in promot
ing the welfare of any particular section
ot country, the subscribers propose to
publish in lh« City of 3t. Augustine, a.
News-paper, under the above title.
The Editors of the Gazette do not wish
to make promises, or to raise expecta

sufficient |to say tha-the politics of thehr
publications shall be Abkiucan, and their
conduct in the management shall be in

“ Open\t» all parties—lnf ucnoed by none'*
It will be the object of their industry
