FTEn a great lapse of time, at an ad- ,
vanced period of my life, and af< or ,
sufferings, the most severe, .mortifying
»•>,! afflicting that ever were endured,
during, a series of nearly forty- years, re
sulting, Iron the causes, that will be most
faithfully, correctly, truly, and justly, i
detailed to vou, and to the world, in the
■oirespondeuce, that will be published,
between myself, and my partner William
Scarbrough, sen, and his son, William
Scarbrough, jun. now of Savannah, from
the year .790 to the year 1319.1 am hope
ful that you will not deem it presnmluous,
malicious or incorrect, that I should cause
the causes, that have produced them, to
appear in print. For although, it may be
deemed presumptions, for any individual,
however eminent, and respectable, he may
have been, to suppose, that his misfor
tunes, reverses and afflctioiis, arc, so deep
ly interesting, Vo the community, and to
the world, as to call on him, for their pub
lication. Yet in tenderness, lor the more
honorable, and respectable portion, ol
human nature, it ia hut reasonable, to
suppose, tnd to hope, that they never
cease,to take a lively interest, in whut
is right and what is wrong; or in what is
virtuous, or, in what is vicious, as they
relate, to the conduct, and deporment of
men, as, on these, most undeniably rests,
the happiness, the harmony, the order,
safety and security cl human affairs. It
ever lias been, and I presume it for ev
er will, be, a privillege, claimed by tin
unfortunate, to complain, when injured.
And, if the privillege, was ever claimed,
and indulged in, with justice, and pi l '*
priety, I trust,, that it w ill, be deemed so,
on the present occasion. To plead, as i
have done, for forty yeais, for anme re
dress, for some compensation, for the
overthrow, derangement, and fund des
traction, of a concern that was once, tin
most opulent, eminent, distinguished, and
respectable, that ever was in South Caro
li"H. And to fad therm, as I have done,
from f*s’id, treachery and collision, be
o/nes. a matter, for the candid, lull, and
impartial investigation, «’f the just, the
impartial, the correct; and upright, oft.ie
world And to those of that description,
and most particularly, to those ol my sis

After the toils of t,n many years, and a
life all but exhausted, in offer's, to leave
a character, fair, honorable, upright, and
uuimpeached.it may naturally he consi
dcred, as a source, of great solace, and
happiness, to the mistorlunale mar, to
be aide; to bring under the impartial ex
aminalicn, and investigation of eminen
men, the interesting, urd leading uaus.s,
that have operated so f a ally, to » con
cern, one, so eminent, opulent, distil -

culiar solace, of the unfortunate surviving

can make these details, of the origin, riai,
progress and final close, ol tins concern,
to the eminent, citizens of his sister state
of Georgia, on whom, he is forced, by cir
