J.T is the glorious characteristic of the
.‘ge in which we live, that the Press, not ,
Hie heiaid, isalways the attendant tifto
very revolution, having for its object the
vmancipnlion of mind or the happiness of
man. The Provinces of Florida having
now become a part of the territory ot the
United States, it is believed that the tide
of emigration will set rapidly towards
her shores increasing her wealth, and
filling her ports with our enterprising and
industrious fellow citizens of the old
States, and offerin'* a home and a refuge
lo the exile and fugitive from the oppres
sion of liuroperji thraldom Favored bv
nature with a fruitful soil—abounding in
articles of luxury and commerce, and
blessed with a climate more congenial to
the constitution of the etrangerand sojour
ner than the Southern slates, this section
of our Country must become great and
powerful, and ; n time rival its neighbors
in Agriculture, in Commerce and iu Arts.
With these impressions, ami under the
belief that a well conducted Press is one
of the most powerful auxiliaries, not only
to morality and religion, bwt in promot
ing the welfare of any particular section
of country, the subscribers propose to
publish in the City of St. Augustine, a
N't wr-paper, under the above title.
The Editors of the Gazette do not wish
lo make promises, or to raise expecta
tions which may never be realized. It is
sufficient ,to say that the politics of their
publications shall be Amf-bicak, and their
onduct in the management shall be in.
strict accordance with the maxim—
“ Open to all partus t’Muenced by none."
It will be the object of ts eir industry
\ and labor to render the Gazette the vehi
cle of the latest intelligence. Political,
Commercial and Literary, and no effort
will be spared lo render it a pleasing, and
interesting and a valuable Publication.
