I HE enemy lies retreated after hom-;
'balding and heseiging our out posts for
nearly two months—and, as his ammu
nition appeals to be exhausted, it is pre-
Burnable lie will not renew the stuck.
It belongs to a great mind to do honor
to a inagitttitimons enemy. With all the chi
v-I-v of a Trojan Achilla we have been
ass led; and it is only truth to say, that
O' r enemy is mi inverse prototype of that
mighty Greek—Achilles was only vulnera
ble in the heel— he, in the head. The very
whis ! ers of the enemy curl'd with indig
nation, as he was forc’d to retreat;—lnn
as the fortune of war h*.s fi own him at
e our mercy, our peculiar modesty forbids us
to triumph over a discomfit ted foe.
O, shade of llvootHsriliuii. whos e bright

chint of thy adversaries, say,—did ever
thy enthusiastic follower filch from thy
bright unedth of curls, one single hair to
adorn the cranium of his reputation f No!
would the immortal Knight of Suds reply.
Having thus succinctly and modestly no

The Iloiida Gazette.
It is (he glorious characteristic of the
age in which we live, that the Press, not
the heiald, is always the attendant upon
every revolution, having for its object the
emancipation of mind or the happiness ol
man. The Provinces of Florida having
now become a part of the territory ol the
United States, it is believed that the tide
of emigration will set rapidly towards
her shores increasing her wealth, and
filling her ports with our enterprising and
industrious fellow citizens of the old
States, and offering a home and a refuge
to the exile and fugitive from the oppres
sion of European thraldom. Favored bv
nature witli a fruitful soil—abounding in
articles of luxury and commerce, and
blessed with a climate more congenial to
tile constitution of the stranger and sojour
ner than the Southern states, this section
of our Country must become great and
powerful, and in time rival its neighbors
in Agriculture, in Commerce and iu Arts
Willi these impressions, and under the
belief that a well conducted Press is one
ot the most powerful auxiliaries, not only
to morality and religion, bwt in promot
ing the welfare of any particular section
of country, the • subscribers propose to
publish in the City of St. Augustine; a
News-paper, untLr the above title.
The F.dilors of the Gazette do not wish
to make promises, or to raise expecta
tions which may never he realized. It is
sufficient to say thatthc politics of their
publications shall be Amkiiican, and their
ondiict in the management shall be in
strict accordance with the maxim—
" Open to all partus •I’* fenced by none."
I. • f
It will he the object of their industry
