THU USD AY JUNE 28.
“ What is the news ?”—is the morning,
noon, and evening’s enquiry, of our
friends.—lndeed we give, gentle reader,
•w.ce a week, all we know—and a great
deal more than we brieve—for now-a-days,
it were sinning against the cannons nf’con
science, to believe all v-e hear; however
it may be enjoined upon us from nblirra
linn nr from interest, to publish what we
do not know.—Something must be paid,
or the reader is disappointed, -and the
Editor is blamed for a dunce—or an
inattentive fellow—his paper is call cl an
’.nterestingf or of course sinks—for with
a discerning community, all uninteresting
papers - ns f —Now the
case stands thus One poor printer, is
dependant on another poor printer, for
materials to fill up his columns; and whet,
’here is a general dearth of interesting
matter, who is to be the first victim offer
ed up at the shrine of the readers’ curio
sity ?
Must we manufacture intelligence ?
This woulc be subjecting us to the oppro
brious appellation of fibbers—despica
ble character!—Nor do we believe it is
more incumbent upon us to invent, than
it is uponti.e community to act, so that
something may transpire, to saciate the
longing appetite of the newsmonger. In
•ruth, a runaway mutch—a street broil—a
talc of scandal—a broken head—the es
cape of Bo iaparte—the amicable adjust
ment of diffviences between Gcoige the
fourth and his affectionate consort &c. —oi
any little matters of this kind, would be a
vast relief to the alarmed apprehensions
of the printer—not to say, a penny in his
ocket, if all were as anxious to hear thes*
('lings, as he is anxious to gratify the wish*
•s of nh !—Horrible situation between in
terest and feeling —woeful quandary!
I grant, that if dissentions—if pri
vate fends—if electioneering cam-isa—and
those things exstted, which te”d to
i.iSiruidc the people and subver' the in.
terest of the state, then in tr.th, would
the independent a d sagacious printer,
have no possible excuse for not giving
something interesting—nay, not only intc
lr resting, but hupyoving; but when a
is equanimity—sunshine—accordance ;
■vhen uniting their tributary opinions, the
(i opie f rm t common sea, dee.p and uu
nffl d by agal. of lissen i m, who then
so the sake of novelty, or to further
some sinister designs, would be justifi ■
ble in causing a billow to dash upon its
surfaC' ?
We, therefore, throw ourselves tr on the
liberality of our readers, and promise,
when we can get it, to give them son e
i iing mure interesting than that which we
piescnt th'-m with, this afternoon.
I lie following beaulifi' sketch is
highly worth the reader’s atten’ion. —
would it were in our power to furnish such
a precious morsel on each sheet vve issue.

CIRCUMSANTI \L EVIDENCE,

the case of the State of Alary land against

the prosecutrix Our present object is
merely to recommend to those ol our
readers, who are liable to serve as jurymen;

who feel the awful responsibility of an

throne of justice to procure and read
this pamphlet.—and to pause well, when

On presumptive evidence was this unfor

to have been committed by l.agounl, ate,

sufferings nave been such, that even tiic
