none has awakened into activity a greater I
exertion of the virtuous energies of hit I
nature, none has excited a greater warmth I
of veneration, anil has more imperious I
claims' upon our gratitude, than resistance
to tyranny and political oppression,
in those republican stales which have
b-en the admiration of the world, the first
tribute of genius was pa d to the putrid
and heto who piornoted the cause of liber

it would indeed be no favorable presage
of tbe perpetuity of our republican insti

obligations we owe to the members of tire
illustrious patrons of the American frees
dom. They advanced us, by their mug.,

pire in the hearts of their successors, the
example of these generous benefactors
will not be lust to the world, their names
will nut pass away nor be forgotten, or
their glorious deeds bcconfouiuied in the
common and casual transactions of hte.
Ingratitude is a vice that in nations, as
well as individuals, indicates ihe last de
gree of degeneracy and corruption. It is
a vice implies the absence of every vir
ttte ; it was in the age of .Caligula that tber
name of the Scipios was prescribed and
the statute of Brutus brought death
its possessor.
“'I he glory of our ancestors is the light
of posterity," aud the homage of the liv
mg cannot be offered to llie merits of the
illustrious dead with an ineffclual or ste*
rile admiration. Great and splendid ac
tions will seldom be achieved by men who
have humble or ordinary objects in pros*
pect. It is by contemplating the lives and
characters of those who art marked out
from the multitude by their eminent qua!
ities, that we become emulous of there
virtues aud their renown. It is by read
ing the history of their renown.—lt is by
reading the lus'oty of their generous and
npble actions, that sympathetic emotion*
are excited in the heart, and by a reitera
tion of such feelings, that grandeur of sen*
tiraent, dignity and elevation of character,
and habits of virtue are generated and
confirmed.- Lycugus clad in armour the
statutes of tlie gotls, that oven in their de
votions, the citizens of Sparta might have
the images of war before their eyes; ob
serving well that the disposition of the
mind, like a limb of the buoy, was invigo
rated by exorcise and activity. “He in*

virtue and the contempt <-f vice in all their
pursuits and recreation, and by these arts
they were possessed wiih a thirst of honor,
an enthusiasm bordering on insanity, and
had not a wish for their country.” Tlip
trophies of Miltiades interrupted the
sleep of Thcmistocles ; and Tlicsus, in
listening to the exploits of Herculus, was
lived with his spirit, and bename the sue*
cessful rival of his fame. The uncultivat

from the deeds of his ancestors, and hangs
