the subscriber, before the first of Octo
ber; next as he will not hold himself re
sponsible for any that may be longer with
held. It is scarcely worth the price ol
labor, to ask those indebted to pay; he
hopes however, that the honest debtor
will consider it as rather difficult to sub
sit. for the space of fifteen or twenty years
on the nutrement received from the pass
ing breeze, and will sometime in tkc
course of the next ensuing ten or twelve
years, present him with something more
substantial; and at least allow him the
privilege of closing his business, and
commencing some oilier, for which, he,
if alive, will be ever grateful, &,c.

ILL lake notice that the 101st sec
tion of ihe General Ordinance of the city
of Augusta, ■ ill be enforced after the
first of June—-It reads as follows:—“ All
Boats not iu actual use, shall be removed
from opposite the city, during the months
of June, July, August, September and Oc
tober, annually. Boats found opposite the
city, during the above named months of
the year, containing water in the holds,
shall be seized by any officer of Council
and conveyed from the city. Any person
violating this section shall be fined, at (he
discretion of Council, in a sum m.t ex
ceeding one hundred dollars per day; and
shall, moreover, be liable for all expences
-incurred in removing such boat or boats.”

an insolvent debtor, lv fore the honorable
Elias Beall, John Hardeman, and Joseph I
Moore, justices thereof. Ordered, that the
22d day of September next, be and is
hereby appointed for the meeting of this
court again, upon the application of the
said James D Gresham, at the Court-house
of said county —at which time and place,
it. is further ordered, that the said James
I) Gresham be brought up before this
court; and also that all and singular the
creditors as well those at whose suit the
said James 1) Gresham is confined, ns also
ail those to whom the said James 1) Gresh
am is indebted, shall he summoned to up
pear in person or by attorney, to shew
cause, if any they have, why tiie said James

ble rained bridle on, and is about fifteen
lands and a half high, a very long tale,
long head and neck, and a small lump on
me of her fore ancles, and had a sore on
the middle of her back, hut now well.—
Forty dollars will be paid for the thief
and tlnriy for the Mare, to be delivered to
the subscriber, thirteen miles above An,
gusta, or with Edward Bird, of Augusta
at the City Hotel.

the dissemination of useful knowledge—*
in the correction of political abuses, it
stands proudly pre-eminent above every o.
ther institution—it is the hand maid to
the Arts and Sciences—the conservator
of Genius, aiidthe Pioneer to the match
of Liberty and Virtue. However corrupt
a Press may be; however ably and skil
fully conducted, it cannot long retain an
undue influence upon the minds of the
People; -the glare of public observation
through which it moves, like the unsulli
ed Mirror of Confucius, immediately re
flects its defornjinily; and exposes its vc.
nality. Some one bar aptly observed, that
oi'inion is the Queen of the // or Id / She
is emphatically so in a government like
ours. The aristocratical maxim, “ the
people are their own worst enemies,” under
whatever semblance it may appear, will
still retain an impress of its original fea
tures; and the ken of an enlightened
