about number, belong to a faculty whose
organ is situated in a part of the brain
near the external angle of the orbit. The
object of this faculty is calculation in gen
eral, When much developed the arch of
of the eye.urows is considerably depress
ed, or is elevated at the outer extremity.
This confirmation is apparent in tfie por
traits and busts of great calculators, as
Newton, Euler, Kaesmer, Jedidiah Bux
ton and Pitt. The heads of negroes arc
Very narrow at this part; and, in general,
they do not exc p l in this faculty.
28. Tune, The perception of musical
tone is distinct from that of sound, and im
plies a different faculty from that ot hear
lug. Its organ is placed on the- lateral
parts of the forehead. Its form varies ac
cording tp the direction and form of its
convolutions. In Gluck and Haydn, it has
a pyramidal form ; in Mozart, Viotti, Zuin
sleg, Dusseck, and Crescenlini, the exter
nal corners of the forehead are enlarged
but rounded.
The luads and skulls of singing birds,
especially the males, exhibit this organ
fully developed. Monkeys are absolutely
destitute, ofit,
29. Language. The organ of the fa
culty.of learning the artificial signs for the
operations of the mind, of perceiving their
connexion with the thing signified, and
of remembering them, and judging of their
relations, occupies a transverse situation
in the midst of the knowing faculties, and
presses upon the orbit of the eye, so as to
project the eye forward when much de
veloped. This produces what is common
ly called a goggje-eye, denoting strong
verbal memory. Sometimes the eyes are
not only prominent, but also depressed
downward, so that the under eye-lid pre
sents a sort of roll, or appears swollen.—
Such persons are fond of philology, that is,
they like to study the spirit of different
languages.
The second genus of the order Intel
lect, viz. the reflecting faculties, contains
the following species;
30. Comparison. This faculty compares
the sensations and idi as of all the other
faculties; and points out their difference,
analogy, similitude, or identity. Dr. Gall
observed various persons, who, in every
conversation had recourse to examples, si
militudes, and analogies, in order to con
vince others; and seldom to reasoning and
philosophical arguments. Nations who
have this faculty in a high degree, art
fond of figurative language.
31. Causality This faculty examines
causes, considers the relations between
cause and effect, and always prompts nu n
to ask. Why ? Persons fond of Metaphy
sics have the superior part of the forehead
much developed and prominent in a he
mispherical form, as Mendelsohn, Kan',
Fichte, and others. The ancient artists
have given to Jupiter Cupitolinus a fore
head more prominent than to any other
antique head
-32. Wit Persons who have this facul
ty, who write like Sterne, Voltaire, Piron,
tic. have the superior external parts of the
forehead el vated. The essence of this
fatuity consists in its peculiar manner of
comparing, which always excites gaiety
and laughter, Jest, raillery, mockery, ndi
cule, irony, Hie are its offspring
33 Imitation. Persons who have a con
siderable elevation of asemiglobular form
at the superior part of the forehead, have
the faculty of imitating, with great preci
sion, tiie gestures, voice, manners, aod,
In general, all the natural manifestations
of men and animals. They have a dispo
sition to be actors, and are prone to gesti
culation. This organ is, in general, more
developed in children than in adult per
sons.
Excepting in the case of idiots, all the
thirty- hree organa above described ar<
possessed by every person, but-they exist
in greater or less perfection in different
individuals.

« Business is very dull; the demand for
Cotton very limited, owing to the high
freights to Liverpool. There are but two
ships in Port, but have all their cargoes
engaged ; one of these is nearly full, and
the other only arrived yesterday, is get
ting freights at lsd. The proposed ad
ditional duty by the British Government
oh importation of all Cotton, tends much
to depress prices—particularly as there is
to be a discrimination between the pro
ductions of their colonies, and foreign
Cottons; —the latter to pay double the du
ty of the former, which roust operate
much to the prejudice of all low priced
Cottons, will bear heavily on Uplands;
and almost totally exclude Tennessecs,
and indeed inferior Uplands and Alabamas,
should the duty to be fixed at the maxi
mum proposition of 2d per lb.”
