The Currency. —Mr. Binnce, President of the
United Stales Bank, has addressed two admirable
letters to the Honorable Jons Q. Adams, on the
subject of the currency. The second letter is
especially interesting, handling the subject with
that lucid simplicity of style which generally
grows out of a writer’s thorough Comprehension
of his subject matter, and placing the question
within the grasp ol the most common capacity
He demonstrates in it the two great causes of all.
the derangement and pressure which exists in the
money market, viz: the injudicious transfer of
‘deposits which the administration lias wilfully
made, under the surplus distribution act, and the
Treasury Circular, requiring specie for public
lands. These letters again force upon the Ameri
can citizens a mortifying comparison between
their directness, truth and ability, and the Imbe
cile shuffling, non-committalism and falsehood of
the documents from the Federal Executive depart
ments. Fite difference is between the mind of a
freeman of elevated character ami tire quackery
of serviles in elevated stations. — Charleston Mer

' EATER FROM ENGLAND—DIRECT.
By the Br. ship Celia, Capt. Black, arrived at
Charleston on the 30th instant, London and
Liverpool papers to the 391 h Oct. have been re
ceived.
It will bo seen, from extracts under the com
'mercial head, that Cotton had declined in the Li
verpool, as well as the London market—attribu
•fed in some degree, to the deranged state of the
Money Market.
A letter from Messrs. T. Wiggin & Co. of
London, to a Commercial house in New York, on
the subject of the last movement of the Bank of
England, which had reached London and been
re-published there, had produced much excite
ment in the higher commercial circles of that
city. The double charge is made against some
Dank Director, not named, of having violated his
oath in disclosure of a secret with which body he
became officially acquainted, and against the Di
rectors at large, in not preparing the houses more
immediately concerned for the policy they were
about to adopt, against those concerned in the
trarde to the U. States, The effect produced by
this movement, in putting a stop to orders for
English goods, is strongly deprecated in our
London papers.
We find little political news of interests in these
papers. The still beginning, never ending, civil
war in Spain, is kept up with alternate success
on both sides. The Carlist Gen. Gomez, who
had been pursued by forces very superior to his
•own in numbers, had out-manoevured them all,
and returned to Cordova on the 13th October.
The Liverpool Mail of tho 38th of October
says: tho Money Market still languishes under a
depression which is seriously affecting the value
of Manufactures.
A Printer's Epitaph. —An opulent Printer of
London, who had long been a compositor, re

epitaph inscribed on his tomb stone, after his
death :
“ No more shall copy bad perplex my brain,
No more shall type’s small face my eye-balls strain;
No more the proofs’s foul page create me trouble;
By errors, transpositions, outs and doubles,
No more to over-run shall I begin,
No more be driving out or taking in,
Tho stubborn pressman’s frown I now may scoff,

% REMARKS.
'' COTTON.—On Thursday last, Liverpool ac
counts to the 29th October, of an unfavorable
character, were received here, the effect of which,
upon our market, as regards the middling and in
ferior qualities of Cotton, we arc unable to state,
in consequence of the exceedingly dull condition
it is in at the present lime. It is supposed, that
if sales of these qualities were at this time forced,
a reduction of at least } of a cent on last week’s
prices, would have to be submitted to. On tho
finer qualities of this article, these accounts have
had no effect, and there remains a steady demand
for prime and choice, ot last week’s prices. We
quote, extremes, at 131 a 161 cents per lb., re
marking that there is very little for sale which
will command tho lattet price.

formerly of this city. Those who knew him

been established in a neighborhood where his
popularity as a physician was rapidly extending,
rand was equalled by the zeal with which ho dis

his constitution at length gave. way. Ho died,
