Tiic bloody strile of civil war, urged on
hy religious and political fanaticism has
commenced in Switzerland.
An army of 5000 men, termed the free
cores, from their voluntary association, in
vaded the Canton of Lucerne for the pur
pose of compelling them to drive out the
Society of Jesuits. The town of Lucerne
was hastily fortified, and an army of from
10.000 to 20,0IM) men raised to repel the
invaders. The volunteers were repulsed
with the loss of 600, or according to some,
1,200 men. The country people of Lu
cerne who had suffered them to pass with
out resistance, set upon them in their re
treat with such fierceness, that it is said,
that out ef 4,000 or 5,000, not more than
2.000 escaped massacre.
